The other day we were talking about various nerdy subjects and the future. We started talking about how in Star Trek, there was no currency and how thanks to replicators, daily life needs were taken care of. This discussion continued to a few other side conversations but ultimately ended with "wait... if they have transporters in the future, why does everyone shuttle around?" Hester came up with the fact that on a populated planet, it wouldn't be practical since the computers would have to store so much data and would probably be over burdened in busy periods. all that data, getting blasted around over and on top of other data.... bound to have some accidents.
