The end of the "Who Shot Bruce Banner" story arc really felt like Marvel was just phoning it in. From a botched cover (you'd expect someone to make an appearance if there are arrows sticking out of the Hulk....nope) to a horrible theory that if Banner heals as the Hulk, things won't heal properly (his brain). Obviously, the brain is more complex than skin or bone, but if this was the truth wouldn't Bruce be a mass of scar tissue and disfigured bones by now? On top of that, the only thing that we find out is that a seemingly random female double agent shot Banner. Such closure.
Without going into too much deatial, the arc ends like this: the people that had Banner shot sent a version of the Abomination to finish off the job but eventually the Avengers rescue/take hold of Bruce in a Banner state and whisk him away to one of Tony Stark's facilities. It is here that this comic finally got my attention again.
Tony and his brother figure that one of the only ways to heal Bruce's brain is to pull out one of their abandoned/forbidden projects : Extremis. This was my first reading of it, so here is the expanation:
...Extremis is a super-soldier solution. It's a bio-electronics package, fitted into a few billion graphite nanotubes and suspended in a carrier fluid. A magic bullet, like the original super-soldier serum—all fitted into a single injection. It hacks the body's repair center—the part of the brain that keeps a complete blue print of the human body. When we're injured, we refer to that area of the brain to heal properly. Extremis rewrites the repair center. In the first stage, the body essentially becomes an open wound. The normal human blueprint is being replaced with the Extremis blueprint. The brain is being told the body is wrong. Extremis protocol dictates that the subject be placed on life support and intravenously fed nutrients at this point. For the next two or three days, the patient remains unconscious within a cocoon of scabs. (...) Extremis uses the nutrients and body mass to grow new organs. Better ones...
One of their main concerns was 1) How long would it take for Bruce to recover and 2) If Extremis worked 100%, how much smarter than before would he be. The thing is, Banner recovers in what seems like minutes after his procedure is done. He not only recovers but is operating at THE OMEGA HULK capacity!
There seems to be some gap in the storyline due to the Original Sin cross-tittle event that happened, but when things resume Hul....I mean, Doc Green is in full control.
Even though Doc Green's actions are good in nature right now, I can't help but think that he is ridding the world of these other Hulks and gamma weapons so that he is not only the smartest being, but also the most physically dominant as well...but to what end? I will admit that this story arc has me intrigued. Hopefully, it doesn't lead to another let down again. Last but not least, you might be wondering, 'what of Banner?' Well.....
