Happy early Turkey Day folks! This is the continuation of my last post, working on the 60mm deff dread base. Some new things are included in this post, including a small segment I like to call "greg working on something", which is a video with a new mount while I work. Will require refinement over time for sure!
I'm also going to adepticon! I got a weekend pass, and signed up for eight painting classes!
I'm currently waitlisted for blood, puss, guts, and gore (hehe laugh everytime I think about that), but otherwise got into pretty much everything I was interested in. No tourney at adepticon for me, just going for hanging out and painting!
Now off to the bases!

So this is where we last left off. Base coat and glazes done. Now onto powders. I seal the entire base with ard coat before proceeding, in case I really mess up.

So I am still not entirely sure how to utilize powders. It has been suggested to me to make a sort of heavy wash with them, for more control. I think I'll try that next time.
Right now, I am putting a tiny amount of powder in a plastic container, and using a stipple brush to apply, and spread it around. The first powder I went for was terracotta earth..whoops, bit too orange for me.

Lets move onto some dark earth. Bit of a spotty application, but I am also blending these as I move along.

Some ancient earth to add some variety. I felt the grit/dirt area was getting a bit too dark.

Violet, which instantly darkens everything way down. (Also a very expensive powder to produce!)

And now onto my favorite...the rust. I use three rust powders. Red, Orange, and Brown. I apply each one at a time, making sure to somewhat blend each into one another. At this point I realize everything is getting really dark, and I'm losing a lot of my colors.

The last time this happened, I used the magical fixer, and the base came out like magic! Lets try it again.
(look at how drastic the colors change when the fixer hits...don't worry, it comes back!)

And...I've lost almost all my blue/greens. Hrm. So I contact the internet. They suggest a few things, such as white spirit/mineral spirit. I don't have time to go to the store, so I remember something misterjustin said "You can just use alcohol to take off the excess". So since I sealed the model, I start taking bits of alcohol, and using my finger and brush to slowly rub it off. Now comes video time!
I got a little clamp mount to put on my desk, so I can film myself while I work, so I can show how I actually paint. It was on sale recently (yay pre black friday), so I picked one up. What I'm doing in the video is taking the alcohol, and just brushing/pulling the excess powder off the surface until I can see blue again!
I might have to get a lightbox next. My lighting setup isn't that great at capturing these super subtle colors. But you should be able to see that the metal plate stands out a lot more now, and some of the color has returned. I'm much happier with how it looks now!
Next up, some xmas surprises for my buddies! Look forward to next week when I paint a completely different army...Thanks for visiting, and have a wonderful holiday! (or hopefully a beer at least)
