I have a rule in our home that Sundays are a do nothing but game day. I believe that everyone needs at least one day a week to recoup from the crazy world. Yes sometimes it doesn't work out but 90% of the time this is my rule. We order out food and just sit in our PJs and do nothing. It gets me through my week.
So for one of my Sundays my friend Sgiahatch convinced me to try out the Elder Scrolls Online beta. He's been on a MMO beta kick lately since a couple are coming out soon. We used to guild for a few years together so of course I'll try something he sends me. I've heard some fairly nasty things about this MMO and some friends still warned me as I booted it up. I always like to try/watch/read things in case my taste is different then others. This wont change if something breaks, tastes terrible, is actually made wrong etc. but I have found I liked things that others haven't so why not? Also.. Skyrim?! jah.
I've seen enough jumping puzzles to see where this was going...
Well... uhm... I played most of the day but had to give it up by about 6pm (I started around 7am). I usually go through a beta till it kicks me out but this was one I just couldn't jump back on after getting dinner.
So I booted the game up and I found the boy models.. yes yes.. quite good.. had to quickly look up Sgia's message on facebook.. what were we playing again? Ebonheart Pact? oh right.. yes yes.. Well.. Im going to be Argonian of course. They always look interesting.
Well I thought I was going to create one. It took me a while to get the game actually working. When I clicked on the female modules they decided to vanish. The boy modules were perfectly fine. I tried turning my video setting all the way down. Logging out and in. Quitting the game and starting it up again. Re-installing said game and yes rebooting my computer. I'm not sure what went wrong but it magically started to work again and I happily spent some time playing with the character editor.
It wasn't overwhelming like some new games are but it wasn't limiting which I enjoyed. I could make my girl bootilicous or I could make her flatter then a cheese board. I decided not to go crazy but made her super short with black eyes... because her soul is dead.. dead to the world you see.. blacker then the blackest black of.. oh you get it.
I'm sure you've read the many many beta testing reviews on this game so I wont bore you with the tiny details that you've probably already heard since I have as well. The beginning was of no surprise since every MMO starts with a newbie town (and I read about it..) Pretty basic breaking out of prison. Can't really fuck up since they lead you right to where you need to go. The baddies don't attack anyone but you even though there's many other fleeing from the prison. Well they do at the end of the run but you need to learn how to fight so they come at you like you're holding a "fuck with me" sign for the first few areas. It didn't take me long to get through the beginning and get to the newbie island. It was pretty much a button masher with a bit of dodging. It was almost impossible to die playing as a Templar. I think I died once when I first started just because I wasn't paying attention and pulled a guy you were supposed to attack as a group. just repeat the same buttons over and over..
We had the character that made me think of every annoying pixi ever known and another bug where the npcs sink into the ground.
About halfway through I think I was already to get off the island and see what else was out there. The graphics were beautiful as expected and the gameplay was super easy but as others have mentioned. there was just something lacking. The storytelling... the writing... it just didn't click. Nothing was driving me.. I wasn't connecting with my character as I've done with the past. I wasn't her trying to survive and create a personality for her.
Also for a mass beta.. from other MMO betas they were way past this stage by the time they stress tested their servers so to find little things that hiccuped I was a little sad. Alot of the shops were selling inaccurate items and two of the quests were off. One was to find villagers to get them out.. which.. the villagers were missing so you had to force the quest forward.. in which you had to log in and out to keep it going.
I got off the island and went a bit farther into the game but just couldn't do it anymore by the time I stopped playing. While I don't think I will be playing this MMO again Im sure some people did find this game wonderful and will be moving on to the live game after. I just wanted more meat or something new to draw me in.
If you have money and time to burn. You have friends who are already planning on playing this and only this and you don't have any other MMOs you think you'll be playing for a while go for it. If not then I would wait for the next MMO to come around and just stick with Skyrim for now if you need that fix.
