A Stompa, a Gorkanaut, And a Deff Dread Walk Into a Bar

1/7/2015

Destroying the building and all it's inhabitants.

Do you like giant walkers? Do you like rolling endless amounts of dice? Is Green your favorite color? Then you've come to the right place...because I'm working on an ork stompa, which brings new meaning to the word "Dakka Dakka!"
Where did we leave off?  Hmm...I was frustrated with stompa magnets, putting stuff on the stompa, cleaning the stompa, thinking about priming the stompa...basically the kit was draining me.  It's a mighty big kit...I mean the little turret on his shoulder? That's a killa kan body.  That's how big this guy is!

Yet another ork model I have to work on! Oh and I know it's not perfectly aligned, I blame Greg.
PictureMagnet fits in the little nut on the top!
So one of the problems I ran into...was I didn't prep properly with magnets.  I used way to small, and way too weak.  So I had to spend a lot of time redoing nearly all the magnets.  First off, I had forgotten about the little crows nest tower and I glued things on the wrong side...so I had to find a way to both fit it, and allow for transport.  (most of this stompa is magnetized for transport, because I want to play with it!)

So I found a little spot on the top to take the crows nest, and it worked pretty good.

I then setup a second magnet for the other banner...it will turn out to not be enough.  Here is the little rig I made for the banner, and the second magnet position.  Note that little flat area? That was for the FIRST banner.  Good job Greg.  Of course I can't glue anything to the back of the stompa, as he will be laying down into a foam box.

My old trick with using the magnets "in" the smoke stack wasn't working either.  So I used a technique shared by misterjustin.  He shows you how to take some puddy to make an impression of where an object is, so you drill the correct point.  Works great getting magnet expressions!  It wasn't perfect, but it got really close to being perfect!

I also made a little rig up so the chainsword arm doesn't slam into the table if it pops off it's magnets.  The magnets hold, but not if you directly wack the sword.  Oh that sounds bad.

Next I had to setup the ammo box for the main gun.  This kit never ends. :).  Luckily I had things mostly within spec, and I was able to glue and mount everything just right, so it all lines up...and once again detaches with the main gun so its easier to transport! (and paint!)

At this point I started gluing on tiny platforms for grots to stand on.  This caused the banner to flop off.  Oh my...so I glued it to the smoke stacks. So much for my little tiny rig to hold the banner up!  I also decided I wanted a giant eye on my stompa..so I took the light and did some modifications to glue it to the face.

Necron lord for scale.....WAAAAAAARGGGGH!!!!!!
With that, I declare the model done.  I could spend another week or two just covering him with bits, but I have to get him started if I want to use him at LVO!  So with happy glee (and the fact it was 15.5C or 60F this past weekend), I took....

The Stompa
My Gorkanaut (which I finished for the priming session)
New objective Markers
Bases for the dreads
My Deff Dread (which the replacement parts came in for and I finished!)

and 1.25 cans of Chaos Black primer (and my airbrush!) to the garage

Big image time! BAM!  I used up exactly all my primer.  Then I started hitting up the stompa with greys, to add some variance on the surfaces.  But no, I didn't stop there!!!!!
I went ahead and started on the brown layers for the rust (and base for yellows).  I used two P3 colors, Battlefield brown, and Bootstrap Leather with three drops of vallejo rust wash (in each mix).  The end result is lovely.  He's already looking mighty rusted, and I haven't gotten to the brighter brown/orange or purple colors!  I concentrated mainly on the upper sections with the brighter colors, trying some of that fancy stuff you see the other bloggers do when they actually know what they are doing and aren't randomly spraying things. (I'm really guessing when I do things).

You can see lots of the random bits I left laying around.  I also left the grot heads grey so I could wash them quickly.  (they'll have little vents over top of them).

After doing this with the stompa, I think I am going to abandon a lot of my other plans.  I want a bad moonz walker force, so I'm going to be doing alllllll the dreads like this now.  I hope you all like heavily weathered yellows and oranges!

BONUS PHOTOS!!!! It snowed and I teleworked on tuesday, so got a bit of extra painting time in.  Finished the walker bases and (killa kans, deff dread base (temp), and gorkanaut base).    Shantz also did another Tales of the Dice Comic! Stop by to Check it Out!
Quite an update today! Hope you guys enjoyed it!  Going to be a grand surge of activity in terms of painting now.  Everything primed and assembled, just have to paint away!  Thanks for stopping by as always! Hope you guys aren't as cold as I am in MD at -12C!
