Honda's Blog: The Battle of "Four" Armies

12/29/2014

"It was amidst a great conflagration of arms, did the multitudes of the army of men from Esgaroth succumb to the hordes of the Elven host upon the planet Erebor."

- Things Tolkien Never Wrote, Chapter 17, pg 25, Anon

(Special Note: We just redid the site architecture, and we are still figuring things out, so apologies for any oddness -Greg)

Well, Tolkien fans, we are back.

What does this post have to do with Tolkien? Very little really, but when a writer is looking for a "hook", many times there are few depths he or she is unwilling to succumb to. Perhaps some of you were hoping for an insightful critique of the latest episode of The Hobbit (tm) franchise along with a clever twist of a word or two.

Alas, twas not meant to be...for either of us.

All I have for you is a battle report, featuring four mythical armies and very little in the way of special effects, spiders, or dragons.

A Happy Haemy Xmas and a One Year Reached!

12/24/2014

Comments

Welcome back friends! I hope you are having a wonderful holiday.  It's a great time for us here at FYN, as this also marks our one year anniversary!  Though I came down with a nasty illness the last week, I still was able to get some work done on Shantz xmas surprise, the Haemonculus!
Picture
This is far sturdier then you would think.
Since I last worked on the haemy, I decided to attach him to his base.  This was mainly because I wanted to both give myself a good avenue to paint him, but also ensure I could use plastic glue to permently attach him to that base.  There are few contact points, the cloak, the spine, the back foot...i used plastic glue on them all, and the result is that he does not budge.  This model is not flimsy by any definition now!

Guest Blog: The Short, Unhappy Life of Titus Quinctus

12/22/2014

So...c-cold...

Every minute of his existence was defined by one thing. A deep, unending, bone numbing cold.

Picture
Titus had given up on trying to comprehend what was happening to him a long time ago. In fact, he had stopped trying to remember how long he had been in this situation, as it appeared that time as he understood it, no longer applied to him.

It appeared that he had now come under the effect of something much greater.

Painting Tyranid Ripper Swarms: A Thousand Claws

12/17/2014

Comments

Welcome back friends!  This week I finished yet another complete unit!  Surprising I know, but it is the holidays!  This time it was a three groups of three ripper swarms for Aegis's Nids.
Picture
So much work in these guys, when you realize there is four per base!
So let's start off where we last left.  I stripped the rippers, based them, primed them, and painted the bases. (I love painting bases first).  The next step was to try and match the blue table painting scheme of his other nids.
Picture
I DID NOT PAINT THESE! (Blue table painting did!)
The nid scheme follows a bone sub surface (I don't know what to call it), and a purple carapace, with light green and turquoise highlights.  Since I don't know the actual paints used, I'll be doing my best to match it!

Honda's Blog: Of Heroes and Monsters

12/15/2014

Comments

Welcome back, ladies and germs!

I am happy to report that I have finished painting Ethanaal/Eldrad so that he will be available for our big game on 1/3/15.

I'm fairly happy with the blend of colors. I wanted him to stand out from the rest of my Eldar, so that meant using rich colors, yet staying within the palette I defined for myself (Sand, Turquoise, Purple). The only "step-out" was the warm yellow band that I used to separate the purple from the turquoise.

That was a bit of a gamble in that, from a color wheel perspective, yellow is a good contrasting color, but I wanted to make sure that it remained a soft contrast and didn't hit the viewer across the eyes. So I started off with a brown base, then mixed in some GW Averland Sunset and Vallejo Pale Sand to lighten, eventually working in some Vallejo Off White to get the paleness I was looking for.

The other thing I was aware of is that there are a lot of different types of white on the figure, e.g. helmet, gloves, rune armor. So I needed something that wasn't white, yet gave me a lighter boundary between the darker fabrics.

It seems to work.

Greggles Painted Something: Necron Scarabs!

Cat's and dog's living together! Greggles painting something other then a base? WHAT?  Hold onto your brushes! I've gone full on hobby crazy!
Picture
It's Primer Time!
This past weekend it actually got to around 50F (10C for the proper folks), so I was able to hit everything up with some primer finally.  Everything you see primed here is from my last post, plus two bases I made for special projects.

As mentioned before, to keep to my budget (and to give myself practice), I made all these bases from scratch.  I'd be following a similar theme with both armies, matching a grey rubble style.  (Similar to the blue table painted model pictured above).

Honda's Blog: Naughty Children Spank Their Nannies

If you came here looking for one of those British tabloid articles, I'm afraid you will be sorely disappointed.

On the other hand, if you wanted to read about the inaugural outing of my Iyanden in their first ever battle report ("WEB EXCLUSIVE" ELEVENTY!!!), then you certainly came to the right place.

Greg couldn't resist putting this image up.
Sooo, one of my long time friends, El Jefe, brought out his Grey Knights to take on my Dead Men Walking Eldar army. Jefe has been playing GKs through thick and thin and remained loyal to them throughout their several incarnations.

How can the observer know that? Quite simply, really. All his Grey Knights are metal. So he's a serious, since 4th edition, GK player. When the codex changes, he makes adjustments, but he remains true to his original army. He is a consummate GK kind of guy, certainly quite canny, very crafty, and amusingly jammy.

Holiday Xenos Assault! Tyranids, Necrons, and ???

12/4/2014

Comments

Welcome back! Got a whole slew of stuff for you this time!  No orks or templars...instead I bring you a little holiday gift I'm doing for the other 40k players on FYN!  I decided to do this on a whim one day, and set a small budget for myself (under 20 bucks a person), and was able to get everything super cheap off ebay...but you'll see why in a moment!
Picture
Nom Noms!!!
For Aegis I'm doing three units of three rippers, the bog standard for most nid tournament lists.  (Though the new spores are awesome points wise, they can't hold, or contest points, so rippers still offers a sound tactical choice).  I have a box of Aegis's misc leftover nids from battleforces and such, and was able to get all the rippers I needed from it.  Of course a bunch of them were already partially painted in a scheme that was completely different from his current one.

Guest Blog #8: Introducing Farseer Ethanaal + Turkey

12/1/2014

Comments

Considering the time of the year and our most recent holiday, I offer up to you a cornucopia of subjects.  Think of this post as a plate with a full serving of mental "turkey, mash potatoes, asparagus, and pumpkin pie".

It would be to your benefit to also imagine it prior to ingestion.
Picture
The alternative would be...even more mixed up? Let's just not go there, agreed?

First off, as part of our Thanksgiving tradition, I do all the cooking. I rather like this task and find it both relaxing and entertaining...except the last bit where I am attempting to get everything on the table (table set? check!) in its finished state so that when everyone sits down, the food is warm.

So the day started getting this ready to stick in the oven.
Picture
In case you are wondering, that is two four pound turkey breasts, rubbed with olive oil, cinnamon, and black pepper. Surrounding it are diced apples, pears, celery, onions, grapes, and cranberries. I like a fruity flavor in my turkey and these birds soak up all those juices and come out amazing. Highly recommended.

If you're hoping for a post-baking pic, apologies, there's just too much going on in the last 15 minutes before sit down for me to make that happen. At the time, I just didn't think I'd be writing about...well, turkeys.

Oh well, such are the fickle  and capricious skeins of Fate and Tryptophan overloads, but mostly Tryptophan overloads.

Next up, painting.
