Welcome back internet warriors! Instead of complaining about things in 7th edition, I continued painting. Well as much painting as I could do until my power went out! My main objective this week was using the airbrush a bit more. So I went to town with the airbrush. I layered on lighter greys, followed by some white highlights. I like to call them highlights. In reality they are more like "oooh it sprayed close to where I wanted it too!". My skills with the airbrush are pretty low at this point, but I figure terrain is very forgiving, considering I haven't even tried to paint any of this stuff since I've had it.

Do you find yourself constantly going back and working on the same section of a tank, over and over again? I found myself doing that yesterday. I think it's quite possible that you could spend hundreds of hours working on just one of these small rhino chassis models, and still not finish. I decided to call a stopping point, before I burned myself out.
It's amazing how much time gets sucked up by this hobby. I spent the weekend playing games with Macuthu and Shantz, and working on the Hunter Stalker. There won't be a full bat rep this time, as I forgot my remote shutter, and the game ended early. So you'll get some photos and humor of that Friday (with hopefully a finished Stalker/Hunter!) Where we last left off with the Hunter/Stalker , I had just done the initial primer and base coat/wash. Then followed up with a very tedious codex grey line work. I'm very happy with how this base layer of chaos black + vallejo grey spray + vallejo black wash really dirtied up the base. It looks really gritty and very different from my previous tanks. Hey Guys! Hope you are having a blast reading about 7th edition that, and 7th edition this. I've been taking this time to try and build/paint as many things as possible. (to distract myself) It's been a very busy few days. I've worked on orks, necrons, dark eldar, and black templar...and tried an airbrush for the first time! I finally got some time to start experimenting with the airbrush I got over a year ago. It's your bog standard amazon 17 dollar airbrush + compressor. I figured I'd cut my teeth on something cheap and learn the ropes before going for a really nice model. I started with using some vallejo air grey, and just did light passes over the buildings. I somehow jammed up the nozzle for awhile, till I figured out it was my own stupidity. This was a really dark grey, but I was amazed at how it started pulling detail out so quickly. I'm going to do another pass with a lighter grey to add further details, then probably a wash. Anyone have suggestions on a good bulk wash? I was thinking army builder dark tone, since you can get it in the big can. I was also amazed at the painting efficiency of an airbrush. Used 1/3 a bottle, did 6 buildings and two vehicles. Welcome back! This week I've been finishing up my neophyte sniper scouts for my ETL vow. I also got a nice delivery from Chessex with some custom dice, and some new bases and goodies from Dragonforge Design! As part of my vow for the bolterandthechainsword ETL competition, I had to paint my ten sniper scouts. I was originally aiming for a tabletop quality...but I seem to be unable to prevent myself from constantly going back and adding more details to the model. As such I always seem to end up with "tabletop plus" quality. I guess they'd call that level 1.5 in the painting field. The model with never ending detail. Every time I thought I was done, I'd find another bit that needed work. Took me quick some time, but I'm calling him done for now! From the last stages, I basically worked on the servo harness, and swapped out his bolter for a plasma pistol. The nice thing is that since the entire model is magnetized, I can pose him in different ways, or if I want, remove a limb for further detail work later. I would like to get a templar cross on his right knee, and his left shoulder. I had some brass etching, but no matter what I do, I can't get it to lay correctly on the shoulder pauldron. So that leaves me with free hand. I need to practice a bit before I go back and work on the model further. Hope you like him! Now I'm off to work on the scouts! Finally working on my own army again. Painting the Master of the Forge (techmarine with servo harness). What an enormously detailed model. I just love this sculpt. The layers of detail are both amazing, and frustrating at the same time (I'm using the smallest brushes I have!) It took me awhile to settle on the scheme for him. I wanted him to share in the standard scheme of techmarines from mars, but also have black armor. I settled on the reds from the rest of my armor as the highlights to the black armor (instead of standard grey/white armor highlights). It came out extremely menacing. It's been quite a chore to get the lines on there sharply. I've done by best with the tools available to me! The yearly painting contest on bolterandchainsword has begun! Every year each subsection of the forum pledges to paint a particular amount of points for their faction. I'm painting for black templars, and my first vow is around 560 points of units. My vow consists of... Storm Talon (typhoon missiles) [145] 8x Sniper scouts with camo cloaks 1x camo cloak heavy bolter with hellfire rounds 1x Vet Sniper sarge with camo cloak [162] Master of the Forge with Digital Weapons and Power Axe [115] Hunter [70] Stalker [75] When i finish this vow, I can make another. If I fail to complete the vow, I have to wear a badge of dishonor on the forums, and the points are removed from the Templars total. It's a fun competition, and everyone really gets into it. I got a little carried away and put a sword in my vow, so everyone started putting maces, and light sabers in theirs. So much fun. Highly recommend it (it goes on till august 1st), if you need a bit of friendly competition to get painting! |
