Hondas Blog: Prelude in Black Templar

7/27/2015

Comments

Well hello there, long time no see.

I'd really like to be able to say, "Honey, I'm baaaack!", but unfortunately, this is going to be more like an unannounced visit from that crazy Uncle Bob on your Dad's side that your Mom can't stand.

Picture
Also , you'll notice that the subject matter is a little different than what you are used to seeing from me, though the explanation is rather simple.

My first and one true love is my Templars. I started them back a few years ago and fully immersed myself in their lore, when we still had the 4th Edition codex going for us, even as we were in the latter stages of  5th edition and jumping into 6th was not yet on the horizon.

Prior to that, I had started a DIY Chapter of my own design whose lore, which quite unknowingly on my part, was very similar to Templars in a lot of ways.

Mekanika Studio Paint Rack Review, Capital Palette Mini

9/12/2014

Comments

Hey Guys!  Been a crazy week and I'm finally getting back into the groove of things.  Today I bring you a review of the Mekanika Studio paint trays.  I have been on the look out for some trays to house my mini's, and came across them a few months ago.  Been storing money on the side to pick some up, and finally hit my target.  So I get some paint trays, and you guys get a review!
Picture
Click the image, or the following link to zoom off to the review.  I try to tuck the reviews away so it's easier for browsers to access...though I've been a bit lazy in regards to my section of the sites organization.  Always something to improve upon!

Mekanika Studio Paint Tray Review!

In other news, I've been thinking on the ork army some more, and also finally got my capital palette photo of the templar I entered.  (Was lost to the warp for awhile!)

Black Templars High Marshall Helbrecht Finished!

8/4/2014

Comments

Welcome back everyone! Hope you had a good weekend.   This past week I finished my final vow for the ETL competition on Bolter and the Chainsword Forums.  The last part of my vow was the Black Templar HQ, Helbrecht.  Read on to see how I painted up this gorgeous and absolutely painful finecast model!

Picture
Like the inquisitor, Helbrecht was one of those models I put off painting, because I was intimidated by the sculpt.  To say this model has a lot of detail is a massive understatement.

There are layers upon layers of detail.  It doesn't help that the model is practically singularly case (besides the sword and power pack), so separating components into painting sub assemblies isn't possible.

ETL III Completed! Zeal for the Templars!

8/2/2014

Comments

Quick Saturday post for you all!  The ETL has come to an end.  I thought you'd like to see a completed photo of the entire painted army I did for this competition (on behalf of the Templars faction).  Hope you like it!  (Also has a sneak peak of Monday's post, Helbrecht!)

Picture
One Storm Talon, 10 Sniper Scouts with Sarg. Counts as Grimaldus, Helbretch, Master of the Forge, Terminator Chaplain, Witch Hunter Inquisitor, and Hunter/Stalker.

I'm off to play some X-wing and D&D.  Have a great weekend guys!

The Inquisitor Who Broke My Heart

7/31/2014

Comments

Greetings everyone!  This Thursday post continues my quest to finish my ETL III vow before the friday deadline.  In this case, I was working on a Witch Hunter Inquisitor and having a blast.  Until something horrible happened....
Picture
About a year or so ago, my friend Jeremy gave me this metal model as a gift.  At the time the model was so intricate and detailed, I put it on the side until I felt I had leveled up my painting skills to give it a decent go.

In the meantime, I used him to represent some other models, played around with him some, and generally moved him about.

Reclusiam Command Squad Chaplain Finished!

7/28/2014

Comments

What! What's going on? Did Greg finish another model already?  That's not possible!  Well thanks to the warp staying in check, I was able to get a good deal of time to work on painting models this weekend.  I split my final ETL vow into individuals (instead of trying to paint all four at once), so it's rapid fire completion time!

Picture
This is the chaplain from the GW Reclusiam Command Squad Box.  I wanted to use this fellow for a counts as Grimaldus, as that model is quite expensive.   I was able to get him separate from the main squad box, but he had a few problems.

Black Templar Terminator Chaplain Completed!

7/24/2014

Comments

Greeting friends and random google searchers.  I have a new favorite GW sculpt.  It is this terminator chaplain, which I have just finished.  This is such a beautiful model.  Such a dynamic pose.  I love it!

Picture
Since the last time, I've done an enormous amount of work.  I meant to take photos, but when I get into the grove of working, I tend to forget...then suddenly I'm five stages further along!

This makes it a bit difficult to fill content for the blog, because I throw out a good post or two of WIP's :)

Terminator Chaplain Progress, Grots, Lava Beads?

7/21/2014

Comments

Another weekend of not much hobby progress.  I'm starting to get project overwelmed lately.  I should have waited to get the ork stuff till after I finished my templars.  Now I'm swapping back and forth and getting confused on what step I'm on!
Picture
I decided to narrow down my field, and concentrate on finishing one HQ at a time.  I picked the chaplains first.  Terminator, then power armor.

I threw some blu-tact on the arms so you can see the model as it stands.

Almost all the base coats are now done.

Progress on the Black Templars! Misc Thoughts on Orks!

7/18/2014

Comments

Back from the beach and onwards to duty!  I must turn towards my ETL vows and finish my Templars before continuing on my Orky devices!  Now on to some progress shots!
Picture
Worked on the templars for a few hours this evening.  Just some base coats.  I started working on the bottom layers of gold/bronze.  Covering four HQ's with even a base coat takes some significant time.

This is also the first time when you start seeing the model come to life, as bits and pieces start coming to the surface.

This chaplain terminator model for example...is just covered in detail.  I keep finding more and more pieces of glorious exquisite detail.

Ork Trukk's.  WIP Templars.  Xenonauts!

6/27/2014

Comments

It's finally friday.  Sometimes weeks just drag...especially when you are waiting for your first codex release in 6 years.  Supposedly it's a mixed bag...I hear my killa kans are going to be crying.  We shall see!  In the meantime, I threw some paint on my ork trukk's, did a layer on some Templars for ETL, and played some Xenonauts!
Picture
If you've ever wondered....gee, I wonder how bad Greg's stuff looks like right when he starts...well here you go.

This is pretty much a super thin layer of ivanden darksun over a 50/50 boltgun chaos black base coat.  It needs a good coat or two more before I can start actually working on washes, highlights, etc.

Morkanaut Magnetizing and Steam Sale Browsing

6/20/2014

Comments

Welcome back friends!  I hope you are as excited as I am.  The steam summer sale, and the ork codex goes up for pre-order today!  Woo!!!! Well I'm excited, my wallet and bank account aren't!

I spent a lot of time working on the Morkanaut in the last few days, as well as shuffling around more things in my reorganization.
Picture
So here he is! Quite an impressive model.  Lot of detail and work into this guy.  Thanks to fellow bloggers, I was able to magnetize all sorts of goodies on him!

Watching paint dry was a great source for tips, as well as how to magnetize the Mork/Gorkanaut.  The ideas I use are direct from his video and guide!  On to my build!

Upgrading Paint Station! Inquisitor, Bases, Gork/Mork

6/13/2014

Comments

Welcome back!  I spent the last few days reorganizing my entire painting/building area.  Don't have as much progress in my painting, but it's REALLY nice having a nice work area now!
Picture
This is my old work area.  Cluttered, messy.  Difficult to find paint.  Poor lighting.  It's also the dining room table.  (You can tell I live alone!)

I decided it was time to revamp this setup.  I'm trying a "read more break" to see if it changes how the blog rolls post these updates.  If it doesn't do anything, I'll go back to my standard style.  (Tell me if you like the breaks better or not!)

New Projects, New Techniques, New Orks!

6/11/2014

Comments

Welcome back internet clickers!  I hope this bit of text is enough to tingle those index fingers to bring you from the blog roll, into the amazing world of feed your nerd!  That was pretty ridiculous. I won't do that again.

But what I will do, is talk about what I'm working on this week!
Picture
I'm working on the four HQ's for my Black Templar ETL vow.  I'm painting a counts as grimaldus (new chaplain model), a Witch Hunter Inquisitor (with a null rod, book, inferno pistol, and power armor), A terminator chaplain (what a cool model), and Helbrecht.

At this point I've just finished priming the models and putting a base coat on the the bases.  I always like doing the bases first, helps keep me motivated.

Storm Talon (Templar Style) Finished!

6/6/2014

Comments

Put a cross on it and it's done.  Calling a stop on another project.  The storm talon is looking great, and I'm preparing to start my next ETL vow.
Picture
Since last time I did the following to the storm talon.

1) Sealed it with purity seal.

2) Highlighted all the metal bits.
3) Orange highlighted all the red bits.
4) Finished working on the guy in the cockpit
5) Sponged wear and painted chips on it.
6) Used weathering powders to add soot to the gun and turbine vents/exhaust.

Black Templar Storm Talon Progress, Ork Supa Kannon

6/4/2014

Comments

Hey everyone! I'm back from New Orleans.  Had a wonderful time visiting my sister and hanging out with my lovely lady...but now it's back to serious plastic business!  I was able to work on my storm talon yesterday, and also purchased a few goodies!

Picture
I finished the line edgework (much like the hunter/stalker), base metallics, and the first wash.  This is just the base red at this point, and will soon get it's second layer + wash/highlight.

The line work on this one is a bit messier.  The sharp angles plus a degrading brush caused them to be a bit slopier.  I'm telling myself that it's an aircraft, so it should be a bit less clean.  We will see how I feel when it's completely done!

This is also not it's final form.  I'm currently hunting ebay for drop pod fins at a decent price after seeing a tutorial from Danny over at hand of junk!

Picture
Danny's conversion is simple, and looks quite cool.  I'm going to modify his design to still keep the turret on the chin, but otherwise I like the new placement of the missiles and longer wings.
