Hey Guys! I actually did some hobby work this week! This is my first "non test" base for my upcoming army. It's style is going to be the type of base the entire army uses. I hope you like it!
Mmmm...delicious brush water!
When we last left off, I had successfully primed my base. That was weeks ago. I am hobby lazy, so sometimes I just draaaag my feet. But I gotta step it up. Three walkers must be done in time for LVO!
Before we get to the base work, check out a 40k comic by Shantz! He is having a bit of fun with the new nid releases!
So once again, to the palette. Progressively lighter browns, which I mix as the base layers for the piece. The metals get progressively lighter shades of grey, moving to a bright blue. This "shaded basecoat" is a derivative of the James Wappel method. I basically add thin layers of wet color, until it "looks" right, blending as I go along. I'm still refining this process, but one thing is for certain, it's very fast, and VERY fun.
Starting with my darkest browns
Aw yeah! Shading between the dark brown and one step up. Each one of these photos isn't a perfect snapshot, as I am constantly going back, making the previous shade slightly lighter, hitting up different parts of the base, going back, etc.
Getting a bit lighter! You can see how layers start to form. It's like dry brushing, only with wet paint and lots of thin layers.
Lighter still. Getting into the upper range of browns. You are supposed to go "very bright"
Very brightest browns now. Based on my weathering research, I am basically just hitting the base pretty randomly, to create interesting texture and modulated tones.
Now switching over to the grey/blue palette. I made a bit of an error here, as I should have been integrating these colors into the rest of the base better. I'll work on that next time!
Here comes the blue! I did a lot more blue this time, as I want to stick to more colored metals, then the standard greyscales. The weathering powders should help break it up in the later stages.
Blending brighter and brighter blues into the greys now. Really popping out. The base is pretty much done now. Now it's time to start adding some color variance into the piece with glazing!
Yay for Color!
This is a series of secret weapon washes that I mix and blend onto the surfaces, adding greens, purples, and browns back into the model. The effect is immediate, and the colors are fantastic!
You start getting an idea of where all those layers are coming into play now, as each surface of the base is just filled with depth. I didn't get to the next stage yet, as I had to wait for the glazes/washes to dry. That will be for a later post! (Mmmm rust!)
