I think I also used devlan mud on the bricks and steel at this phase as well.
Hey Guys! More base painting this week. I recived a large order from Jeff, so I've been taking time setting up bases for units which didn't have them previously. As part of the purchase, I snagged a urban ruin base to paint for Shantz Talos! I started out with a chaos black priming, then covered the model in a dark grey base coat. I immediately decided this was an awful idea, so then covered the model in devlan mud. I then started painting elements of brick work with Rakarth Flesh. I pick out certain pieces of brick, while leaving the rest the dirty grey color. As I do this, I also do light dry brushes of consecutively lighter grays. (codex, then adminstratum), with some mixing in of Rakarth, to add texture to the rest of the base. I layered a base coat of mourfang brown on the skulls, and balthsar gold, then shining bronze on the shell casings. Lot of interesting texture to this base. Little details to pull out. Screaming skull on the skulls, and some nihilakh oxide on the casings. Got a bit carried away with nihilakh oxide...but it's a bit too fun to use. I start enjoying myself, and suddenly way too much. Still looks ok, but was a bit silly of me to do :). You can slowly see the pain markers progressing in the background. :) I think I also used devlan mud on the bricks and steel at this phase as well. Now comes the fun part. I start going nuts with the technical paints. First I put down some Typhus Corrosion. Making sure to clean up, and work on some of the mud wash I put down earlier. I start dry brushing the skulls with screaming skull and skull white at this point as well. I then add some rust with (you guessed it) Ryza Rust. And then...then I start playing with Nurgles Rot. I have to tell you. This paint is amazing. Roemer, you have to get some of this stuff. It is just so much fun to play with, and it has an instant awesome effect. It is quite possibly the most fun I've had with a paint. (besides typhus + ryza rust). I was giddy putting it on the base, trying to guess where the talos poison claws may have dripped it. Continuing on my pattern of child-like glee, I opened my pot of blood god blood, and started flicking over the top of the base, and putting clumps as if something had been trying to get away. I'm happier with my nurgle placement then my blood placement. I need to watch some dexter for some proper blood splatter analysis for my next application :). I was pretty happy with how the base came out. I was hoping it would contrast nicely with Shantz Dark Eldar, and it seems to have worked beautifully. He was actually quite disappointed that he wasn't playing with the Talos in his list, as he wanted to make use of it on it's new cool base! Here is some shots of the Talos on his new base! (I also magnetized him to the base, as it was crazy annoying to get him to stay on the little ball joint). Paintjob by Shantz! (I just did the base!) Now back to my other projects. That mega dread is taking a chunk of my time! Hope to have some progress photos soon! Next week is NOVA! So the updates will be a bit more sporadic, but full of awesome photos (I hope!). Thanks for stopping by!
