Welcome friends! Had a great hobby breakthrough this week. Have been tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to get the deff dread base setup and finished. Finally woke up with an idea and went straight to work! I went to work grabbing some bitz and bubs to both support the main leg section, as well as cover up the gaps in the various sections of the base. Looking like a proper scrapyard base now. Tried to think about things like...how would someone get onto the rhino top? So made sections which they could walk up, and scratch marks from the constant climbing of the gretchin. Next I got out the oxide paste, and lava paste. First I threw oxide all over the thing...then went back and randomly mixed lava in with it. The main goal of this was to add texture to the metal bits, as well as acting as a glue for the rest of the models components. If you've never used these pastes before, you can get them off ebay, and they are AMAZING. Let me just tell you it looks rather terrible right now. But just wait! As the paste dries, it shrinks, and leaves behind a wonderful gritty texture. Similar to using basing sand on your models, but with a very strong bond. (it's not coming off easily). I may have gone slightly overboard, but I wanted to hide any cork as well (if I am allowed to enter this into capital palette, misterjustin is a judge and HATES cork). I got a 1/16th brass rod, and drilled through the entire base (to the very bottom). Then I carefully drilled all the way through the deff dread leg to the hip. Measured and cut the rod. Set the pose of the deff dread. Plastic glued the heck outta it. Used three pins to reinforce the hip joint. The moment of truth. Will all of these ideas work? YEssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So unbelievably happy now! This dread is utterly gigantic and very heavy, and it still worked out. I need to glue some washers on the bottom of the base, and left it all overnight to dry (not connected yet though). Then it will finally be time to get painting away! Thanks for joining me in my joy of a project idea coming to fruition!
