Favorite Youtube Channels and Xenonaut Spectacular!

11/7/2014

Hey Guys!  It's been a slow week on the hobby front.  I successfully messed up magnetizing my deff dread arms, and I was in general hobby malaise.  It sure was an exciting week for nid players now!  I can't help but wonder how different the year would have been had they gotten all their toys with their codex update.

So what did I do?  Well I watching youtube videos on gaming, and Scott Manly was doing a series on Xenonauts.  I had backed xenonauts before kickstarter was a thing, and it was recently completed, so I dived back in...then I remembered why i stopped playing strategy games...they are a major time suck!
Xenonauts is basically a perfect update of the original UFO: Enemy Unknown or X-Com: UFO Defense. (Depending on your location).

Now recently 2k came out with their own "rehash" of X-Com.  That was not so much a X-com game as a heavily inspired and scripted evolution of the original.  Xenonauts follows the original formula to a T, and adds it's own enhancements.  It was also done by a small indie group, and had backer and community support and suggestions added into it.  (It also supports modding, and has a variety of mods available to it, as well as the ability to modify various parameters in your own game).

Here are some quick comparisons between the original game and Xenonauts, in picture form. Then it's to the youtube section of this blog post!
Of course they couldn't use the same names for things!
Base construction (and possibly invasion) are here.
Geoscape got an awesome overhaul.
Actual tactical missions look a bit cooler! (Though those old graphics are still awesome!)
And lastly, all the base and soldiers setups have seen a massive overhaul.
So as I've mentioned before (I feel like I probably posted about this a few months ago), Xenonauts is a great game if you were a lover of the old Microprose X-com.  Add to steam wishlist and wait for it to go on sale!  Now on to the youtubes!

The reason I got back into Xenonauts was due to one of my favorite youtube channels doing their own style lets play.  I thought it might be pretty cool to share some of my favorite channels with you guys, as maybe you'll find a new one as well!

Scott Manley

Scott Manley started his videos around KSP or Kerbal Space Program (one of my all time favorite games).  He primarily covers Space style games, such as star citizen, xenonauts, KSP, Elite dangerous, etc.  He has a very soothing voice, and it's great fun just having him chat away in the background about space things while you paint.

Striking Scorpion

Some of the most beautiful 40k bat reps you can find on the net.  If you've never seen his bat reps before, you are in for a visual treat.  Though not as strategic or quick as some of the other rep sites I'll be posting...this is the one to go to if you want to see some gorgeous armies. Competitive Scale 2/5 (These scales are for how much of the bat reps are for tournaments, vs having fun with your friends.  1= more friendly lists, 5= tournament lists)

Front Line Gaming

Looking for a quick bat rep, on nice tables, with some humor and strategy thrown in?  That's FLG for you.  They produce bat reps with as much zest as miniwargaming, but keep them sharply edited, so watching two armies clash doesn't take much of your time up.  Some pretty wild strategies at play here, and if you listen to their podcast, you get to know these fellas pretty well as time goes on!  (Also fantastic people to meet in person as well!)  Competitive scale 5/5

SkaredCast

Do you like/hate Dark Eldar?  Then Skared's videos are for you.  Like FLG, he edits his videos to keep them short and sweet, but also has a tactics section at the end where he goes over how each side did, and what he might have done differently!  Competitive scale 4/5

SG Tactics

Do you want to see tactics more then anything else?  Then SG Tactics is for you.  With a lovely table down camera view, you can see exactly how all the armies play out in realtime.  That's right I said realtime.  These are FULL LENGTH battle reports.  Not something to easily digest in a short chunk.  Competitive level 5/5.

Miniwargaming

Been watching these guys as much as FLG.  Really fun group, with nice armies, and a wide variety of game types.  (narrative is their current big push).  Pretty long videos, so nice if you just want to relax and watch Matt calculate the dice roll probabilities, then laugh as it's way off base.  Competitiveness 0/5.

Other Bat Rep Video Sources!

I realized this is getting pretty long...so I'm just going to do links to the others I visit regularly.  I'll hit up the painting ones for a post next week, as i've been working on this not a hobby post for over an hour and it was meant to be quick! Haha.
