Friendly Tournament at Las Vegas Open: Round 2 Orks vs Terminators

3/5/2015

Comments

Hey guys! Originally I was going to do two bat reps in each post, but then it took over an hour to write up and get the last one up...so I am splitting them up.  It looks like the east coast is about to get a foot of snow, so I figure this will give us something to read and chuckle about!

Jeff had some lovely painted mini's!
My second tournament battle was vs Jeff, and his unbound BA terminator army.  Though I'd be facing BA again, it was an entirely different army, and was basically the infantry equivalent to my walkers. (slow, but with tons of hammer and invulns).  We decided to play each other after just chatting and shooting the breeze.  That's how friendly pairings work!  It's like a loose tournament of pickup games.

Round 2: Orks Walkers vs BA Terminators

Game Type: Cleanse and Control, Maelstrom
Deployment: Vanguard Strike
Ork List: Unbound Trust in Rust! (warlord trait, -1 to reserves again)

Deployment

Jeff won the roll off to go first.  The boards were pretty even, so we just picked sides based on where our models ended up being setup.  If you notice, I was previously on the table to the right.  Greg was lazy with moving his walkers very far!

If you didn't read the caption, the harradian wasn't in play.  Gorgeous and gigantic model, I don't think it actually got played int he tournament. The fellow who brought it only wanted to use it if his opponent could actually do something about it...otherwise it's kinda of a crazy nasty model to have on the table.  Friendly tournament...who'd have thought!

Looking at these images again...This may be turn 1.  These bat reps are a bit loose, because we were just having a good old time, and mainly taking photos because the mini's looked cool, not so much to create a detailed battle report.  Jeff was a very friendly fellow, and we were having a blast before the game even started.   You can get a general gist from the turn # by looking for the big giant dice on the table! (Thank you Sarah!)
The game starts and we get at it.  We both do what we do best...move forward to close combat the other.  I make sure to not have the deff dreads blocking the stompa this time, and get the stompa into prime firing position immediately.  For those who don't know about stompa's, they have quite the alpha strike...if your whole army isn't 2+. :)  They fire three large blast str 8 ap3 missiles, a gun that fires three times (2d6 each time) str 7 ap3 shots, and a 7" inch str 10 ap1 blast...in addition to carrying a skorcha, and about 4 big shootas. (one twin linked I think? who knows!).  I concentrate on the thunderhammers in front, trying to whittle them down.  They all have furious charge, so +1 str on the charge is mega bad for me.  (That's a lot of pen possibilities!).    I keep the deff dreads nearby the stompa, to blunt any charges.
Jeff marches his dreads up the one flank (oh man BA dreads are NASSSSTY).  We exchange shots, and I kill a bunch of terminators, but not that many.  I hold killa kans back to grab objectives (maelstrom missions).
Jeff pushes forward, and I push up to meet him.  Turn three is going to be a blood bath.  More shooting, but most ork shooting is really ineffective.  I'm killing one or two guys a turn with shooting from the entire army.  2+/3++ en masse is hard to bite through!
End of turn 2, all the charges begin!  Jeff wipes out a bunch of killa kans, and a deff dread on his first assaults.  In return i wipe out even more terminators, and a bunch of death guard.  The fact his dreads swing at init 4, with rerolls on str 10 really hurts.  I don't get to swing back generally...and he makes 3++'s like a boss!
All is not lost however, in the ensuing combat, I wipe out his normal terminators, deathguard, and most of his 10 strong hammer squad.  The deff dread charges in, and immobilizes one of the claw dreadnoughts (and loses an arm in the process).
Turn 3..Jeff's stormtalon's come on.  Oh oh...BS5 TL assault cannons and skyhammer missiles vs ground targets...he obliterates the killa kans near his objective.  I'm starting to run out of tea light markers.  In assault, his second talon dreadnought takes out the deff dread.  His five hammers terminators smash into the gorkanaut, who kills three of them before falling from str 9 thunderhammers!

Now I'm starting to hurt a bit.  Lost 5 dreads in one turn pretty much.  I decide to go on the offensive.  Mega dread, stompa, gorkanaut, deff dread, and killa kans all push forward hard.  The stompa blows away the terminators that took out the gorkanaut, then kills the other dread in close combat.  The killa kans blow up the dreadnought that was immobilized.

What is left on Jeff's side?  Two storm talons, a handful of terminators and astorath the grim.  On my side? The stompa, a hurt deff dread, a hurt mega dread and two killa kans. We go onto turn 4.
The mega dread and deff dread wipe out the remaining thunderhammer terminators.   (but the mega dread falls in CC) Zero terminator and death company remain.    Jeff's storm talons finish off my deff dread, and blow my killa kans away.  He's forced to hover to grab an objective.  He starts running astro the grim far far away to safety.

I have nothing left but the stompa at this point.  Jeff is slightly ahead of me in points.  I make a rush for the objective (to score an extra points) and try to kill astro.  He makes all his invuln and armor saves on him.  The game ends!  Jeff takes it 6-4 (line breaker, first blood, hull points stripped from stompa, objective cards claimed).  I was hoping for a turn 6 to get another shot at his warlord ( and would have gotten the objective as well!).  Either way, a really close game!
Things I would have done differently?  I would have concentrated more firepower on the dreadnoughts.  All the ork walkers swing before hammers, so they always dealt damage before dying.  The talon dreads though, tore the walkers to pieces on that right flank, and really worried the stompa...(I'm still a wuss with the stompa!).  Either way, Jeff was a great guy and a great opponent.  Was glad to meet and play him!

Bonus stuff? How bout some youtube videos for making it this far!  First Marc's green tide in action!
Next...it's your faithful blogger at the grand canyon!
Luckily.....

Thanks for stopping by! Two more bat reps to go!  Will the walkers actually win something?  My favorite battle is next! WALKER VS WALKER ACTION!
