Greg Plays With His Stompa, Orange Rust Hits the Floor!

2/4/2015

Comments

Welcome back everyone!  Got an exciting post for you this week.  My first test game with the walker mob...against the new Necrons! I also started hitting all the models up with bright oranges for the final rust stage, and will be sealing them (then chipping fluid) this Wednesday (because it's 10C!!!)
Picture
Yes...yessss! Finally on a table!
You'll notice right away (those of you with enhanced optics) that the three killa kans in front look a bit...brighter.  That's because I started with the orange layer this past week!
Picture
This was at first a bit scary, but became rapidly fun.
Oakenhawk had mentioned the past week about "textured" paint.  Though I should have done that way before hand, it got me thinking.  The airbrush is very very smooth, and though it's created a nice kinda of brownish rust, I was having trouble getting the type of look I wanted.  So I went instead to powders and stippling ryza rust on the models, which really brightened them up.  I tried to be a bit random in my application, and you can still see all the variance of the underlying browns beneath (which I was really happy about).  I was able to get to the Deff dread (which I also pinned and remagnetized), the mega dread, and the three killa kans.  The gorkanaut and stompa I usually put off till last, because they have the largest flat surface areas, so I want to make sure I know what I am doing first!

The orange really brightened these guys up.  I was quite happy!  They look really rusty and great on the tabletop. (and they are now different tones from the bases)
I love how the deff dread came out.  The larger the surface area, the better the effect looks.  The kan's don't have much space to show it off.  But as you go up in dread size, you can see all the lovely variance in the surface tones.  Also really loving the gork head on this guy.  He just looks really mean.
Going up a scale again...and there goes that orange just adding all sorts of lovely randomness to the model.  I experimented a bit with some weathering powders, but felt that might look better at a much later stage.  So we'll hold off till then!  I'll be working on the last two (and hopefully sealing all of them) today!  But how did these guys do on the table? Lets find out!

Having not yet played with this list (at all), I wanted to get a few games in before I played someone in a tournament (even if it's friendly).  I didn't want to be that guy who didn't even know how to move his models around.  So Macathu was itching to try out his just released necron's, so agreed to play my unbound walker list.   (This saturday I'll be playing vs Todd's Eldar from SinCain40k!)
Macathu's list consisted of a variety of things from his new decurion Necron thing, which I will call, Never Die Inc.  (wraith formation, destroyer formation, lord with rerolls, and Ctan) He won the roll off, and decided to go first, then I promptly seized on him. YEAH ORKS.
You are probably thinking...geez Greg, can you deploy with any strategy at all?  Well guys, when I play orks, I play orks.  I just throw everything at you.  Get out of my way or you'll be krumped!  (Plus we play with a lot of terrain, so I was trying to find quicker avenues to move the walkers).  I was also a bit scared of deep striking assets, so I was keeping some walkers in the backfield for protection (a silly error).
After I seized, I promptly moved the stompa up (man that thing is fast, I wish all my walkers moved 12 :( ).  And positioned everyone for maximum ork firing.  I fired from right to left, throwing out a ton of shots, and doing very little wounds.  I did nail the ctan for a few wounds, and knocked down a single warrior.  (4+, with 4+ reroll 1's is nuts).  Everyone was going "3d6 shots??" from the gorkanaut, then laughed as I actually only hit twice.

The big news was the stompa...his gattling gun didn't jam , and fired about 26 times, doing some crazy damage to the destroyers...then his massive template hit dead on...at which case Macathu said he was firing his solar pulse...he can't actually do that (has to be at START of turn), but I left him have it, because losing twenty wounds of destroyers in a single shot would have been brutal.  He let me apply the hits to another unit.  The wraiths of course.  Guess how many wraiths died? None.
On Macathu's turn, he unloaded on me, killing a few killa kans, and doing SIX hull points to the stompa.  (The destroyer formation has preferred enemy and shred!).  I think I saved possibly 1 with the forcefield.  (debating dropping the grotzooka kans to put grot riggers on the deff/gorks/mega and 4++ shield on the stompa)
When it came back to my turn, I fired everything at his C'tan (i didn't want him to roll the destroyer weapon), and promptly killed it for first blood. (Ha no reanimation for you!).  We made a few mistakes on reanimation rolls, as Instant death gives you a -1 to your roll now.  (And you can't take them vs destroyer hits).  I kept moving my orks up to get charges.  The stompa made his charge into the destroyers, and promptly stomped two out of existence.  I failed my repair roll to get any hull points back.
On Macathu's turn, his flyer came in and dropped off 10 immortals, which put a hull point on a dread...then because he couldn't shoot the stompa, he turned his firepower on the killa kans and deff dreads...wiping out five killa kans in a single firing round.  Then....then he assaulted the stompa with some scarabs and wraiths.  The scarabs by themselves did six hull points to the stompa, destroying it.  (They can hurt super heavies now, WATCH OUT!).  Rolled a 1 on the stompa explosion, I think I hurt one scarab base.  Ouch!
On my turn, I moved everything up for subsequent charges, firing where I could.  (Also hit the ghost ark a bunch, but it healed all it's hull points back).  Wounds were dealt and multiple charges were failed.  One charge did get through though! KILLA KAN POWER!  They didn't kill anything because of 4+ reanimation with reroll 1's.  (so brutal to get through!).
On Macathu's turn he shifted things around, blew up a deff dread, killed the remaining killa kans (outside of the charged group).  Then we called the game (due to time limit), as the other guys wanted to get a game in.  The final score was 11-3 for Necrons!  I didn't mind because I had a blast moving those walkers around!

I game mastered for this game
The next game was Nids and Dark eldar vs Eldar and Necrons.  This would be a harsh lesson for the Nid player involving skyfire nexus.  (Hint: The mysterious objective for skyfire nexus is right by the forgeworld avatar).
Things I learned about the ork walkers.
Be more aggressive with the bigger walkers.  Hold the kan's back, they just die instantly anyway! (use them more like troops)
Kill scarabs first.
Kill the lord and spyder first.
Um, make repair rolls and invuln saves. :)

Anyway that is it for this week! Hope you enjoyed it! I play Todd on saturday, and will have some photos of that, with hopefully photos of the stompa and gorkanaut rusted up (with possibly yellow killa kans!) next week! Thanks for visiting and commenting guys!
