Greggles Painted Something: Necron Scarabs!

12/10/2014

Comments

Cat's and dog's living together! Greggles painting something other then a base? WHAT?  Hold onto your brushes! I've gone full on hobby crazy!
Picture
It's Primer Time!
This past weekend it actually got to around 50F (10C for the proper folks), so I was able to hit everything up with some primer finally.  Everything you see primed here is from my last post, plus two bases I made for special projects.

As mentioned before, to keep to my budget (and to give myself practice), I made all these bases from scratch.  I'd be following a similar theme with both armies, matching a grey rubble style.  (Similar to the blue table painted model pictured above).
PictureSo much room for activities!
So let's get started!  First I cleaned up my work space..I had debris leftover from my base assembly, so I cleared everything off, wiped it down, dried it off, and set everything back into place.

PictureDon't glue your rippers to your bases before painting them!
Then I put my palette back in place (forgot to do it in the previous photo) and put down some Mechanicus Standard Grey.  I brushed this over all the bases with a large dry brush (including the rippers)

You'll see an interesting effect pop up as I work on the rippers.

PictureLeft base also has a 3rd highlight
Next I moved onto to dawn stone (once again, large dry brush, just bit lighter now).  I'm not using James technique for this, as I'm trying to match existing styles.

PictureLooking pretty good finally!
Finally went over the whole batch with Administratum Grey.   Love this stage, because everything really pops out.  I experimented with some washes to create color interest, but it was too sharp on the grey.  I wanted the scarabs to stand out on these bases, so the base is just being used as a background element.

This finishes the Scarab bases!

PictureI see why Evan hates painting these.
On the rippers, I used a mix of screaming skull and rakarth flesh for the top highlight, as these shades are in the blue table painting base.   Because the rippers were glued to the base, it's not easy for me to access all the surfaces of texture, so it creates a painted shadow under them!

PictureI love this scheme!
Now onto painting the scarabs!  Macathu's Necrons feature a purple, green, and black/dark silver theme.  I'll be trying to match that as closely as possible here!  Here is a sample of some other necron's I've painted for him.

Although these scarabs are a gift, I paint Necrons for Macathu as payment for him being my fitness trainer.  With his support, exercises, and advice, I've lost a phenomenal amount of weight, and so I pay for his time with my painting.  (Kinda of like a commission painter!)

PictureWe live!
I originally tried to transfer the little scarabs to paint pots on putty...it was a disaster.  Since they didn't have any flying stands, and I was going to glue them directly to the bases, I just kept them on the tape.  Then I just started with some lead belcher.

PictureWhich side is washed?
Some badab black wash!

PictureThe one with a half shell is actually pretty cool and I considered keeping it...
Now painting the shells with warlock purple.  I looked into doing some bronze bits, but it didn't add much to the scarabs at this scale, so I kept with a more simple scheme.

Though this moves relatively quickly, there are thirty of these little guys.  Definitely batch painting here!

PicturePlus i could quickly hit each one!
Now the fun part! Adding specs of green.  I had so much fun with this.  They instantly came to life with that little green dot!  (Green is Knarloc Green)

PictureSo many scarabs...
I hit them again with a tiny blot of moot green to give them a bit more vibrance.  I also made a glaze with genestealer purple, and put it on the top edges of the shells.  It's really hard to see, but it did add a bit of depth to them.

PictureSo cool!
As a final step, I glued them on the bases, and fiddled around with some Secret Weapon Fallout Green wash to add a bit of OSL.  It isn't that effective up close, but it looks great from normal viewing distances!

Now onto some pretty photos of them!
I'm pretty happy with how they turned out.  I also made up a little base for one of his old necron lords I had painted, but never based yet.  Just another simple grey, wish some washes to add some variance.

Hope you enjoyed this post.  I'll be working on the rippers the rest of the week, then onto Shantz's secret project!  Have a good one guys!
