It had to happen eventually. I'd have to sit down, pick up a brush, and go to work. Luckily most of the garage work is done for the time being, so I could finally sit down and prime/highlight a slew of models.
I did my normal multi-spray primer (grey all over, then white from above) to get the ork flesh down. Then I also started on the bases, by spraying all the sand the base color. I'm a bit behind in the Nova Open Charity timeline, so hopefully I can catch up fast.
I'm painting the grots in my standard wash method, while painting the runt herder in the skin scheme laid out by the other ork players. I haven't actually painted ork skin in ages, so it is definitely an experience. You';ll also see the bonus mek I threw in the mix as well. (not for nova, just for meee).
As with the previous wash technique, I threw down some devlan mud wash (light coat, being careful to sponge up excess) over the primer, before starting on the skin coats. This provides a nice shadow contrast which the green wash builds on, as well as making the skin look dirty. Comes out pretty awesome for such an easy method.

Did the next few stages of the bases as well. Rocks, sand highlights. All that is left is to do the metallics and rust.
As a fun little surprise, I finally got around to testing an emperors children scheme. Generally I've always painted templars, which is nothing but endless edge highlighting. I wanted something with a pop of color, and something very reproducible quickly (without killing my soul). I liked the fluff of the emperors children...plus the whole init 6 and insane plus's to sweeping advance is awesome, so I sat down and gave an old beakie a try!
The original inspiration for this scheme is from battle bunnies. Basically start with a metallic undercoat, and build up the purple. Because you are painting transparently, the metallic tones shine through the model and give it a type of vibrance that isn't normally possible (or at least not possible at my skill level) with normal paint, outside of spending houses of meticulous blending. I am aiming for this force to be table top quality, and have a strong pop on the table. (vs being ultra detailed of which we'll never see outside of the photos).
I modified Khalls technique by doing a zenithal highlight with the metallics, going from very dark, to medium, to a high steel on the upper ranges. Hoping this would help create depth and shadow on the model.

Pretty happy with the result so far. A fellow on facebook recommended I test this a few more times, as painting power armor like this can be difficult to replicate. So I'm going to experiment with using a sponge on the sub layers, among other things, and we'll have a vote on which one you all like best!
Got some choice weathering shots this past week as well. Went out to the east to get some delicious blue crabs and fried oysters, and came across some lovely examples of streaks and rust :).
