Time to switch engines for a propa orky one! I got to work this week on finishing up a set of five grots to act as hull points for my gorkanaughts/morkanaughts. It was a fun project, and I'm really happy with the final result!
We'll start out on the full photo. Unlike the previous mock up's of the grots, they are all painted, and fully magnetized to the Dragon Forge Knight base!

I used a series of 1/8 x 1/16 magnets (3mm x 1.5mm for proper folks), to attach the grots to the base. I first determined where the legs of the megadread should go, and drilled and pinned small rods in those sections to help kept it steady. The dread itself is pretty heavy and stands on it's own, so it's more just an insurance policy then anything else.
I made sure to recess the magnets so that the grots would snap into place, and almost completely hide their existence. The end effect is quite nice. The grots are also all the same polarity, so they can be attached at any of the points.
The mega dread itself is pinned, and magnetized at multiple joints. The jaw, torso, arms, and weapons are all individually magnetized. The model was difficult to build and work with, so I started giving up trying to glue things, and just started pinning/magnetizing everything I could. At least it should make the model easier to paint!
I made sure to put the mega dread on a knight base so I could use it as a counts as morkanaut. (I don't like buying multiple of the same model, especially when they are all 80 USD+). The hull marker grots will help reinforce this, as I can run five when it's a morkanaut, or three when I'm playing it as a mega dread!

I'm still waiting on my next knight base, which I will do the same treatment too. (It's the one with the actual model!). I took some closer up photos of the grots if you guys are interested. They were painted with primarily washes, other then some metallics and a bit of minor dry brushing. They look great as hull point markers, but won't win any painting contests up close! (plus I missed some mould lines again..grrr)
After this I washed the base, and I'm currently waiting for it to dry. Then it's off to priming, then I'll start laying down layers! I'll be using the same paint scheme as I did for the other ork bases. I did a little guide on how I do them at this link. It may be a bit more elaborate (due to skill levels slowly increasing), but otherwise should look the same.
