Guest Blog Post 5: Iyanden Lords and Pointy Bits

(Honda works some more on his awesome wraithlord/wraithguard, and wows us with stabby bits.)

Prologue

"They've done it again."
Ethanaal looked up from his gem and asked, "Who has done what?"

The nexus is open on "She-who-weeps-pale-zephyr-tears-beneath-the-seventh-moon-of-Arandinell".

"WHO DID THAT?", Ethanaal sat up.

"Uh, the round ears."

"By the unburned boot laces of Kaela Mensha Kaine, won't those spoiled children ever leave anything alone? I am sick and tired of cleaning up their messes. I am of half a mind to just let them live with the consequences of their actions!"

"Well...we did do that a few millennium ago and I believe the round ears still refer to it as the Age of Darkness."

Rebuked, Ethanaal gritted his teeth and spat, "Then what in the twenty seven maiden worlds of Xandinorr are we supposed to do? Are you telling me that we're just supposed to let them wander around like blind idiots sticking their fingers into every dark nook and cranny in the galaxy to see if it blows up in their faces?"

"If it were only that simple, my lord."

"Oh, what a bother. Fetch my armor, we might as well get this over with. Just once, I'd like to be able to sit down and finish the gem I am reading without one of their ridiculous interruptions."

To be continued...
Aaaand we're off to the races!

Like a lot of you, our group have pretty full lives. Sometimes our schedules keep us from getting together on a regular basis, but there's never a lack of desire. It's a good group and we have a lot of fun when we do play, which always keeps us looking forward to the next time.

Sometimes, a group just needs a spark.

In our case, it ended up being a bang. We will be setting up for an Apocalypse game, to be played on January 3rd. The scenario will evolve over the next couple of months, but will basically involve an Astartes chapter, the November Warriors fielded by Mo and Grey Knights/Inquisition fielded by Jefe against Gar's Dark Eldar and me scrambling to bring up the rear with Iyanden.

I say scrambling because I'm the only one who doesn't have a painted army yet. One of our house rules is that you can only play with painted miniatures. That makes it rather interesting sometimes because as you are probably aware, Apoc means lots of stuff. However, our Apoc games are always quite epic and since we only get to play them 3-4 times a year, we want the full benefit of the spectacle.

Or as the Eldar would say, we want to "taste the rainbow".

So only fully painted miniatures, 3 color minimum. So I've got a fair bit of painting to do.

When it's all said and done, we'll be shooting for around 4-4.5K points per side, mostly because Gar has around 2K points and I'll be sprinting to get up to 2K points. Jefe and Mo both have massive armies, so it's possible that they can just kick back and relax. Jefe, however, can be rather devious at times, which is not surprising because Inquisition, so it is possible he'll be scrambling to get his Skunk works cranked up to produce another surprise. You have to watch him every second.

The smack talk has already begun via texting and we'll try to get some pre-big bang games in to warm up, but all in all, we're pretty excited about the first weekend of January. The other thing to keep in mind is that "life happens" and if we have to be flexible as the game date gets closer we will.

Alrighty then, let's talk walking dead.

I've finished my first HQ and troops choice. Seems like it would be a good idea to have some troops to go with those dedicated transports I put together last post.

First off, tall dead guys with swords.

I love these figures. They are sort of a pain in the neck to put together because there's a fair number of places where mold lines could be. However, once they are together, there is no denying how cool they look. My one concern is that they have a few pointy bits sticking out and it looks like I'll have to be careful handling them.

Next up is my HQ.

I'm fairly happy with the overall effect of charcoals on sand. I get the soft contrast I am looking for, but am still able to develop shadows. The end result looks...natural to me. Also, I like how the darker turquoise works with the sand. So not bad overall.

Picture
After I seal these guys, I'll go back and add a little static grass (wheat colored) to break up the bases a tad. I did this with the serpent bases and it turned out pretty decent.

"Uh, hello. I came back with a couple of my friends. I am very excited to introduce to you, Mr. Left and Mr. Right. Ok, now that's done, why don't we revisit our last...discussion shall we?"

Picture
Until next time...

Cheers, Honda
