Mega Dread Base Painted!

8/14/2014

Comments

Continuing on my quest to actually paint some Orks, I successfully painted the base of the Mega Dread this week.  (and the Forge world Biker Bosses base).  It's kinda of a habit of mine to paint the bases before the models.  It helps keep me motivated!  Nothing like having a bunch of cool bases sitting around with no models to put on them to get your juices flowing!

Picture
One thing I've slowly learned with minatures...you never really understand the scope of their size until you start painting them.  Especially if the last few models you were painting were single infantry sized models.  Suddenly jump to something the size of a Imperial Knight base and you can't believe how long it takes to paint everything!

First I started on the base with some Mournfang brown.  Quite messy at this point!

Picture
Then I started painting the main rocks with  Khemri brown.   At this point I realize this is a rather large base, as it is taking quite some time to progress from rock to rock!

Picture
I like to thin the Khemri with water so it flows into the crevices a bit better...so this took more then a coat to finish.  By the end, I felt like I used up a good chunk of the pot!

At this point I also do a light dry brush with Khemri over the mud areas to help add some depth.

Those of you with sharp eyes will notice I'm giving the forge world biker boss base the same treatment.  If possible, I like to do these bases in batches, since the later stages require I wait for washes to dry.  Speeds things up, and makes me really psyched to work on the units!

Picture
Next up is a dry brush of Rakarth flesh.  Why they chose to rename deneb stone to a flesh color is beyond me.  It makes a perfect stone base, and I use it for my templars as well!  (though in a much different capacity).

A much lighter dry brush is given to the under layer of dirt/mud.

Picture
Finally, a screaming skull dry brush on the rocks (trying to hit up areas which I might have missed with the previous dry brushing to add some layers), and the slightly swipe on the underlayer.  Now at last comes the fun part.  The triple wash de greggles.

(Note, slight tonal change here.  My poor use of camera phone)

Picture
This technique I came across by accident.  I was trying to figure out a way to make my brown rocks more interesting.  Maybe I'll add some red I thought...so I dumped some baal red wash on them.  "Oh No!!!" I exclaimed!  I've made my rocks pink!

I quickly dabbed off the excess wash, and was perturbed with the resulting pink color.  In typical Greg fashion, I decided the best way to deal with this, was to make all the rocks pink.

Picture
So I went from rock to rock, applying different amounts of Baal Red wash, and waiting different allotments of time before I soaked up the excess with a towel.  The end result was a variety of semi pink rocks.

You can see the effect of dabbing off the excess with a towel here.  It leaves a random variety of pink in the crevices and imperfections in the rock faces.

Picture
At this point I'm thinking..."well I don't like pink.  But I do like orange!  Maybe I can add yellow to red to make orange!"  I then proceeded to put gryphonne sepia over all the rocks.

That definitely looks better.  But it's not there yet.  So of course, I dumped devlan mud all over the thing.

Picture
Mud wash everywhere!  (controlling the excess with paintbrush and towel).  And just like magic...just like everytime you add devlan mud.  Absolute success!

So there you have it.  My rock recipe is a complete result of a mistake, followed by random guesses, followed by magic mud wash.  The end result is a lot of tonal depth in the rocks, with a mixture of reds, browns, yellows, and oranges.  It works quite well (i think at least), and goes well with the bad moonz scheme!

Now comes the hard part.  Actually painting the Mega Dread!  I'll be working on that for the next few weeks, with periodic updates here on the blog.  Thanks for stopping by and checking out my progress!  Have a great weekend everybody!
