Mucking About With Bases And Weathering Powders!

10/3/2014

Comments

Hey Guys! Welcome back!  We last left off with my attempt at making a few bases.  I'll skip the priming step, since everyone knows what a black base looks like.
Picture
Excellent camera work here!
The first thing I did was lay down some paints on the palette, with some flow improver to help them keep from drying, and mix better.  This is all new stuff to me.  Mixing colors...palette...flow improver.  I went a little nuts this week.
My main goal this week was to...
1) Work on the shaded basecoat method some.
2) Try to make some bases for the different sides of the ork army
3) Fiddle with weathering powders.

I think I did a pretty good job with these goals...although I don't know if I actually produced anything?
PictureYay palette!
So started mixing colors, and putting brush to base.  James method is akin to "wet" drybrushing, where you combine the colors to create a nice synergy.  I'm not there at picking colors properly (with warm/cool tones), but mainly working on the process here.  It is a blast to paint like this.  Big brushes, and using the thumb to blend sometimes!

PictureCooooolor!
Since this method is a lot more wet then I normally work with, I started working on the other base, and threw in a third one for giggles.  This is already quite fun.  The palette is just a joy to work with.  The third base is fiddling with my first P3 color, coal black.  The P3 paints are nice and fluid!  I can see why misterjustin likes to use them for airbrushing.

PictureThe #8 filbert is because I forgot to put the #8 round there.
I'm using a #4 filbert as my primary brush for this.  It is gigantic compared to the brushes I normally use when painting.  I'm also using a #8 round (not pictured), and a #1 liner (mainly for mixing in the thinners)

PictureEveryday is a good day when you can paint!
I like how the bases are starting to look, but I want some lighter colors, so if I add washes, it'll pick up some more color variance.

Above are just some progression shots.  Since I'm trying to do the twitter thing more, I'm trying to pause and take photos as I work.  Makes for a more photo book style blog as well!

So I decide now it should be time to play with the new secret weapon washes.  Oh boy are these fun.  So many really strong colors.  I start throwing them down, and mixing them into the bases to create color variance and shade.  I...I start getting carried away.
I'm doing all sorts of stuff at this point.  Mixing washes into paints...adding technical paints into washes...cats and dogs living together..total anarchy!  On my painting high, I decide now would be an awesome time to open the weathering pigments and start playing with them.

Note: When everyone mentions to you "use weathering pigments sparingly, they are very concentrated and strong"...LISTEN TO THEM!!!!!

PictureThat's exactly what I wanted!
I added what I thought was the tiniest amount of "sewer muck" to the brown base.  Remember it was brown a second ago?  Guess what, it's not brown anymore!

Actually looks pretty moldy, nurgly, so not the most awful of effects.  Very drastically different then just an image or two previously.  I added so little...so little powder!

PictureI tried to scrape and ended up pulling paint right off it. Alcohol is vicious!
Then I made a massive error.  I started mucking about with ancient earth, and dark earth powders on the other base, hoping to get a cool worn effect.  I put too much on, so went to grab the water, and grabbed the alcohol instead.  Oops.

PictureThe idea was supposed to be an "ashy wasteland"
The other base, I added ash grey, and burning sands, and various technical paints and just had some fun seeing how they interacted.  Got a weird sort of bloody base out of it.

PictureSome water effects on the left were brushed on to see what happened.
One more shot of the green moldy/nurgle base.

So I learned a few things from this exercise.
1) Shaded basecoat is a fun way to paint, but have an idea of where you want to go with it...otherwise you'll end up with really odd looking things. (Plan your palette!)
2) Secret weapon washes are super crazy awesome.
3) Use weathering powders EXTREMELY sparingly.  If you think you are barely using any at all, use less then that.

I hope you guys enjoyed some of my experimentation.  I'm going to keep trying different things, until I find just the right combination.  Should be interesting!  Thanks for all your wonderful comments and visits!
