Nova Open Charity BBQ Round 2: Orks vs Double Centurion Pods!

7/23/2015

Comments

Welcome back! Going to try and do one of these a day! I'm excited to get to the gretchin article :).  My next match up was vs Bob and his double centurion ultramarine pod list!
Picture
These drop pods are made from cardstock! AMAZING!
I had met Bob last year at trios/nova, and was looking forward to playing with him.  His setup was really well done, and his army was beautiful, fluffy, and hit extremely hard!

Deployment

So to start out with, I choose to go first...I know I'm supposed to go second, but it was hot and I forgot.  I also figured if I could hold vs the first turn of firing, I'd be in good placement to snatch a ton of objective points at the start of turn 2.  My deployment was pretty easy.  None of his stuff was on the board, so I deployed to prevent rear shots to the dreads in case he seized.

Since his whole army was in drop pods (first time I faced one of these directly), his deployment was done!

Turn 1: The Hammer Falls!

Setting up for objective grabbing, (and for optimal protection), I turbo boost the bikes up (forgetting this gives them +1 cover save).  I shift the dreads so that most are in cover, or have a save of some type, making sure to hide rear arcs.   I move the deff dreads up on the edges, and in the center, pushing on all sides (with a majority of the lesser forces in the center to bait him in) I sit and wait for the impending spears of light from the sky! (Dem lights b purty boss!)
And they came...they came from the sky...screaming blue, with flames and fire.  Shiny with righteous purpose.  They would soon be mine.
-Inside an Ork Meks head

"Wats Dat? Dem blu shinys. Git um boyz.  Gud lootins tnite!"
-Outside same Ork Meks head.

Bobs drop pods are beautifully labeled.  He made them out of cardstock, and IMO they are superior to the GW plastic ones.  They hold position very well, and are easy to move, and about 300 dollars cheaper.  The symbols indicate the type of unit inside, tactical indicating that the drop pods are objective secured.  Bob decided his primary target would be the warlord unit.  He fired with tacticals.  I saved.  He fired with more tacticals.  I saved.  He fired and fired and fired, with twin linking, and rerolling.  The warboss, and the characters lived.  The drop pods all fired.

 The warboss lived.

Then the centurions turned their guns on.  And characters began falling.  And another.

Soon the warlord was dead, and only zhad remained (on his awesome bike!).  Some kans took some injuries (one was immobilized), but the army was otherwise unscathed from the furious attack.   So many krak grenade throws.

Then Mighty Calgar called down from orbit an  bombardment, which was twin linked due to the devastator doctrine.  He centered it over the killa kans in the center of the board.  It scattered.  He rolled again....

Picture
Notice the gap above the grey centurions? Heheh
And Mork, with a mighty laugh, reached his hand down and deflected the beam, causing it to strike the dead center of one of the centurion squads.  Completely wiping them out.  The orks rallied, the orks cheered.  The battle had just begun!

Turn 2: The Orks Clank Ahead!

The orks are so thrilled...their opponents came to them? That never happens!  The walkers clank forward and ready for a multi-tier assault across multiple fronts. (the gretchin also come in, and run up on points)

The deff dread assaults calgar's unit.  The killa kans assault a drop pod.  The meka dread runs off to kill stuff.  Everyone is shooting and charging everything.  Most glorious turn ever.  I think this is one of the only times multiple deff dreads got into assault at once..  You can actually see the exctiment in the orks...WE ARE IN ASSAULT! SOMETHING ISN'T SHOOTING US!

The ork warboss charges tiggy, hoping for a kill.  Tiggy hits him once, wounds him once, so he dies before swinging. (assaulted through terrain)...reading back, They should have both swung at the same time! Oops!  Either way, super duper epic!  Bob was so much fun.  We were cheering each other and giving high fives almost every turn.

The deff dread puts some wounds on calgars unit, blows up a drop pod on one side, killa kans kill a bunch of marines, meka dread kills another pod.  (lot of kills this turn).
More pods land, and start dishing out some damage to the dreads.  Some killa kans take damage, losing limbs, and a grot dies.  :(  Calgar continues to punch the dreads, who HOLDS...he might be immobilized, he might be hurting with 1 wound left, but damn it, the deff dread is holding the centurions in combat.  (once again, best painted model is super power!)  The deff dread in the back takes a melta to the face and explodes.  (dreads don't like meltas)

Turn 3: What an Awesome Flipping Game!

Picture
At this point I start engaging the troops.  One thing about Bobs units...every single squad has a combi-melta, some sort of melta, and melta bombs.  It really really helped him.

So a lot happened this turn, but I only have one photo to show for it.  First off, the meka dread gets into close combat.  Calgar blows up the deff dread (who basically pinned the entire unit in place, RIP deff dread!), and proceeds to kill all the centurions and put a wound on calgar, who RUNS AWAY. Lord of war! HA!
The other deff dread I run forward to try and grab his rear point (and get line breaker).   The morkanaut fails his charge.  Tigirus and some tacticals assault the killa kans.  They rip an arm off one, and the killa kans kill a few marines).

The gorkanaut assualts the unit of marines that killed the deff dread.  He kills all of them except for the sarg....who hits him with a melta bomb, exploding him in a single attack.  Adios 5 hull points! (walkers really need to ignore damage results...).  Was crazy epic though, especially after the meka dread made calgar run away :)

Space marines assault the gretchin on the far back...kill a few, but the gretchin kill a space marine...and HOLD!

Calgar gathers another group of expendable wounds...err I mean tacticals, and assaults the Meka dread.  Meka dread holds again, and kills a few marines.

Round 4: Game is Super Close!

Picture
I start running the last deff dread for the objective in the bottom left corner.  Bob sees me going for linebreaker, and sends the scouts to intercept.  Their sarg has a melta bomb, so have a chance of taking out the dread.
The morkanaut wipes out a drop pod, he's very proud.    Tiggy and the killa kans exchange blows.    The remaining tacticals have nothing to shoot at.
The gretchin try to put a hurt on the last space marine, but he kills the runtherder, and they flee, and are cut down.  (NOooooooooooooooooooo).  The lone marine heads off to the next group.

Calgar punches the meka dread, but I make a save.  Meka dread kills the rest of his buddies and he holds.

Round 5: Back and Forth!

Lone space marine fires at the other unit of gretchin, killing a few (they have no saves, and I didn't go to ground because I wanted to shoot back).
Calgar finally punches the meka dread to death, starts consolidating towards tiggy.
The Meka dread gets MVP in this game for basically tying up units that would have done some serious hurt to the walkers.
The killa kans kill off the remaining marines in tiggy's group, then wipe out tiggy on Bob's turn! YEAH KILLA KANS!
So remaining dreads is basically the morkanaut, (full strength), two killa kans, a deff dread, and a grot squad.  We roll to see if the game continues, it does!

Round 6:  Who is going to win???

Picture
Morkanaut kills another drop pod (he's really good at this).  Deff dread engages the scouts, but can't score due to their objective secured.  I can't get my last 2 primary points before of the objective secured dudes.  Killa kans shoot a bunch...but I think we called the game at this point.  Because I could not score past turn 6, even if the game continued, I couldn't get any more points.  We just ran the numbers really quickly.

Bob got 9 points for primary
4 points for secondary
and 4 points for teritary

Gregggles got 6 points for primary
6 points for secondary (all achieved)
4 points for teritary

Final score: Ultramarines 17 - Orks 16!
Crazy close game!

We discussed how the game went, and I basically REALLY lucked out on that orbital bombardment hitting his own cent squad early on.  There was almost no way to get that cent squad into combat on turn 2, and they would have erased at least 1-2 more dreads on the ensuing turn, which would have put me on a serious backburner.

My biggest error was moving the group of killa kans forward on the upper right , out of the ruins (as I figured the gretchin would have the point), forgetting he had another pod in.  Because of that, with melta, combimelta, meltabombs, and krak grenades, they were wiped out without their 4+ ruin save, leaving the gretchin to tackle a drop pod they couldn't kill.

I think the gretchin in the rear should really have big shootas instead of grotzooka's, (36 vs 18 range), so I have a bit more reason to keep them back and hold an objective.

Either way, this was a fantastic game, and Bob was a great opponent and I really enjoying playing with him! Thanks for a great game Bob!

Hope you all enjoyed this bat rep! Will get working on the final one next!
