Hey Guys! Welcome back! It's been a hectic and busy week for me. Been spending all my free time spraying and painting orks, and working on my display board/shelf.
Always wear a respirator when spraying!
My idea for a display board was two parts.
1) It should be part of a cart (stealing sincain40k's idea), so that it is easy to cart my models around in the hotel

So as you remember from a few posts ago, I found a nice sized cart (that had modular shelves), and purchased some particle board which I cut to slot in them.
So with the board setup, and enough room for all the models, I went about figuring out just how to make it look like my resin bases.
I sanded the particle board, and primed it using a rustoleum brown primer. I read a bunch of reviews online, and found that many people liked the crackle paste for making a crackle type effect on the board. They did note that it was very important to seal the crackle after it dried, as it will be a bit loose. The one bad part about this? The cheapest I could find those small containers for (ebay/amazon/20% off michaels coupons) was around 10 bucks a pop!
So with the help of the lovely Sarah, I plopped all three pots onto the primered base and hoped for the best, doing my best to smooth the surface. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't make it completely smooth, but hoped it would just add some variance in the cracks and make the board all the more interesting.
You have no idea how excited I was, when after 12 hours, the board looked like this. I was soooo happy! It came out beautifully! But They say to wait 24 hours minimum (more like 48) before sealing it, so I waited.
It got even cooler after another 24 hours. The cracks are deep, and create a lovely three dimensional surface.
The texture is almost a perfect match to the resin bases from dragonforge. At this point, I Decide it is time to seal it, as no more cracks change after another twelve hours.
At this point I almost cry. Almost all the cracks disappear under the medium/sealer. I'm heart broken, but hold steadfast as the medium says "goes on opaque, dries transparent"
Luckily the product holds true, and there is no change to the cracks after it dries. (other than the fact that everything is very secure and basically glued into place now). I use the same primer brown again to put the base coat down, and to make sure later paint adheres well.
Next I take it over to the spray booth, and begin putting down the top coat of mournfang brown (Same base color as the main bases). I figure this will be a bit darker, but that's ok. I sent a really long time trying to modulate the browns on the surface to get a cool effect.
And it works out sooooo well. I tried to give different variances in coats in different sections, so it adds a lot of interest. This is where I stopped for this week (since I'm also doing tons of other ork stuff on the side as well), but tonight I'm going to varnish coat it, then do two levels of dry brushes, then finish with an utterly massive wash! I hope you like it so far, I'm extremely pleased!
But that's not all. I thought it would be a bit silly to have this awesome board and all the weathered orks sitting on top, and then having the shelf all shiny and new...so I'm rusting that up as well. Just some texture paint and some ryza rust! Looks the part though!
