Tons of New Goodies, Re-Learning, Malifaux

9/24/2014

Hey Guys!  Another week of planning and rebuilding.  Got some secret weapon goodies in, a respirator, a new airbrush, and some Malifaux!

I've been spending a ton of time watching videos and preparing to start learning new techniques, so it looks like almost nothing is being done on the hobby front.  I'm a big prep-er.  I'll set up my station, purchase the items, and batten down the hatches before I go full bore into creating.  I'ts a bit of the by-product from my old design/science background.  Work smarter not harder!

Todd wins.
We will start with the obvious.  I finally broke down and bought a Malifaux box.  You can thank Todd and G mort for that.  Todd's constant awesome painting, and G morts constant "unboxing" articles wore me down.
PictureEverything is so tiny!
I absolutely nothing about the game...other than not needing to spend thousands of dollars to build up an army.  I picked this box for the same reason I picked the orks.  Look at the pretty models!

PictureHellooooooo Nurse!
I'm currently looking for (or will be building) a metal style floor for these guys.    I feel like they should look like they just stepped out of an operating theater, or are currently in one.  Either way, this fits my need to do some nurgly style stuff :).  Supposedly there are also zombie strippers? What a diverse game!  Sprues and plastic quality are almost identical to Dreamforge.  They must be using a similar producer.  Loving that they come with little figure cards to tell you what everyone does.  Wish 40k did that.

PictureDid you know that by buying an airbrush, you don't automatically know how to use it? The More you Know!
So what else did Greg get this week?  How bout a new airbrush!  You are all probably going...geez Greg.  Did you just get a bonus or something?  Nope! But I had budgeted a big chunk of money for Nova to purchase possible forgeworld stuff, which never materialized.  So now that money is going to things like the new light, paint racks, hobby upgrades.  All stuff that should be useful in the long run (i hope).

I went with the Grex after using one and being impressed at Nova.  Though I'm no expert, it definitely allowed for significantly more precise control then my 12 dollar airbrush I got off ebay.  It also felt nice in my hand, and I liked all the cool little options (like magnetized

The 12 dollar airbrush?  Well I kinda of bent the needle trying to clean it, or it hates me, which results in it randomly spraying off at 45 degree angles, usually in the opposite direction that I want.  I'm probably going to pick up another 12 dollar one, just to use for spraying things like furniture polish on models.

Along with the airbrush, I also picked up some squeeze bottles, some mixing cups (jello shot cups), and a respirator.
One squeeze bottle gets water, one gets isopropyl.  (for cleaning the airbrush and mixing paints).  The cups are for mixing paints, and have tops so I can return to them later (as long as it is not weeks later).  The respirator?  Well this is important.
I brought up a question with misterjustin during his weathering class.  He wasn't wearing a mask when he was spraying, and I asked if that was normal behavior.  He brought up a point that when he's actually working (and not teaching), he's always wearing an organic respirator.  Basically breathing in paint spray, either from the airbrush (or priming), is not good for you.  Though the chances are minor, the possible side effects are beyond nasty, and I won't mention them here.  Since I've had issues breathing in primer before, I decided to follow his advice and pick up a respirator for my own sense of well being.
You can get around not needing a respirator if you have a spray booth with sufficient ventillation (like Todd's! excellent booth or table article!, but remember...if you can smell paint, you are breathing it in. Spray booth, outside, or mask.

PictureSO excited!!!!!!
On to happier subjects.  What else did I get this week?  A whole slew of secret weapon washes and weathering powders!

This is the rust set, and the dark earth set.  I forgot to order the ancient earth and ash ones...that'll be part of the next order.

PictureThe fallout one is the best!
Here are the washes.  I'm really excited about that fallout one...it just looks so AWESOME.  I'm going to be using these washes in combination with my existing ones to slowly learn James Wappels shaded basecoat and glazing techniques.  I'm hoping that by combining what I learn from his videos, misterjustins, and my own techniques, I'll come up with some really cool stuff for the orks.

So that's today's post.  Sorry I'm still off schedule.  I've had some busy weekends lately, so haven't had much hobby time...which messes up my whole weeks posting schedule!  I'm going to save the "a look back" posts with older figures for Fridays post.  Hopefully will have some beginning progress shots for you as well!  Thanks for stopping by guys!
