Trust in Rust: Charity BBQ Nova GT Tournament! Round 1

7/22/2015

Comments

Welcome back Rust aficionados!  This week brings you a blow by blow account of the ork walkers in their first mini GT showing!  The claw was thrown down, and with charity on the line, the orks would push towards victory!
Picture
Not finished, but at least everyone is on finished bases with 3-4 colors applied!
The Charity BBQ was a small GT event, of 11 tables, with all food, and registration proceeds going to breast cancer research.  It was outdoors, under tarps, and in a garage, and led to a very friendly (person, not list wise) social event.  I had a great time, and was even able to meet Joe from Joesavestheday.  I had a blast, and met a lot of cool people.  I wish it was a bit cooler, but hey, we can't have everything!
First I'll start off with an Army photo dump.  These aren't as detailed or laid out as my normal snapshots, as I was actually participating in the event, and most if not all of my games ran till turn 6.   Also since there wasn't an army judging section, it wasn't often that anyone had their army laid out in display form, mostly just in the trays like mine is above.  If you've never been to a GT, figure out a way to fit all your stuff on a tray or a cart...you will thank me later.
Joe also put up a ton of his photos on his blog, so head over there if you want to see some more!

I knew attending this tournament I'd be at quite a disadvantage, as I'm playing more of a friendly/narrative list, where as many of the fellows at this BBQ were practicing for NOVA Open.  Thus don't be taken aback by some of the lists.  These guys came to play, and I was just happy to participate and confuse them all with ork walkers!

Round 1: Trust in Rust vs Necron Triple Canoptek Harvest

Warner brought a really nasty list for me to face, and we both ended up at table 1! OH YEAH! Top of the scrap heap!
Nova Open GT Rules:
Type: Crusade (6 objectives)
Deployment: Dawn of War
Primary Goal Orks: 2 (points per turn)
Primary Goal Necrons: 1 (points at end of game)
Secondary Goals Orks:  Last laugh, Marked for Death (immortals), Moment of bloodshed
Secondary Goals Necrons: Linebreaker, Marked for Death (gretchin), Heart of the Matter? (forget)

Deployment

My memory is a bit foggy now, so Warner, if you are reading this, feel free to correct me in the comments!  Warner won the rolloff and had me go first.  I deployed to cover a good range of objectives pretty quickly (as I started getting points on the 2nd turn from them).  My bikes also had scout, which would come in extremely useful.  I apologize for the darkness of the photos.  We only had a single overhead light, and then the ambient diffuse light from the window, so the camera was having a heck of a time coming up with some of the shots.

Warner deployed a majority of his forces on my left (his right), with the 3x groups of 3 tomb blades on my right, with the catacomb command barge.  My deployment is based on the fact all those walkers take up a huge amount of space, so it's hard to do a flank denial with them, so I tend to make sure everything has cover.  I keep the grot squads in reserve...I always keep them in reserve.

When it was time to scout move, I zoomed the bikes away from his wraith stars.

Turn 1: The fury of slow movement!

I go first, so I shuffle my guys around to offer some protection from shooting, putting the av13 wall in front.  Most of the necron is str 5/6 (with gauss of course), so blunting that incoming fire to allow counter charges is my idea.  I make sure I am holding three objectives.  I run everything, so my turn is really fast. (love this list)
Warner goes, moves all his army forward, using the wraiths as a mobile shield wall, with the warriors and spyders behind.  He creates bases from the spyders, which he surges forward.  They are his primary means of attack, as they are basically free troops that are downright deadly to vehicles.  Going to be a hard fight.

Picture

Warner has only has his heavy destroyers in range.  He fires one.  Hits the gorkanaut.  Pens the gorkanaut.  I fail my 4+ ruins save.  He rolls a 6.  Gorkanaut explodes on the first shot of the game.   Oh oh! He was the one carrying all the toilet paper!

Turn 2: Dat's the Wrong Way Boss

With the orks losing one of their favorite scrap heaps, they turn to the kunnin tactics from the brutal ones.  Everything shifts back and away from the incoming horde of undead, I mean robotic enemies.  The killa kans and a deff dread move to blunt the incoming scarabs, and the morkanaut and another dread go for an outflanking manuver.  DA boss and his squad, along with some support go after the right flank.  I think I kill some bases this turn.    I collect some points from holding objectives...holy crap! I won't be zero'd! WOOT! Already a victory for the orks!  My gretchin come in, and move to hunker down on some objectives.

Oh man I didn't take any photos this turn! DOH!  I think it was because it was pretty boring.

Warner presses forward on my left flank, he kills a few killa kans, and gets some into CC with scarabs (along with a deff dread).  I could really use 1-2 more big walkers in this list (come on GW, reduce their points next time).  I kill some bases, a killa kan bites the dust!

Turn 3: Waaagh time!

The orks continue moving to the right (warners left), while a dedicated few try to block the necron advance.  I declare my waaagh, and the morkanaut and deff dread make it into the far flank of the necrons.  On the other side, a unit of killa kans is holding strong against the scarab (with a deff dread helping), giving the necrons no targets to shoot at on that flank.  (my main goal here was to just slow down the advance, as the wraiths/destroyers have me easily in movement speed, so anything to prevent them shooting and/or advancing is huge).  I try to kill a spyder, but fail, as those reanimations are nasty things.
Another unit of wraiths and more scarabs slam into the killa kans and deff dread holding the bottom of my left flank.    I lose another killa kan...but one kan holds about 4 bases and a wraithstar in combat.  (Someone is getting a promotion!)  I overextend my right flank with my meka dread, and he takes the combined firepower of nine tomb blades.  He almost makes it into combat...almost.  I'll pretend I was planning on this, to bring the tomb blades into charging range of the biker squad.

Turn 4: I start killing things!

With so many wraiths and bases, it's hard for me to get the targets that really matter.  This time though, the death of the meka dread has left an opening for a multi-charge from the biker squad.  I need a really long roll to get a multi-charge off, but I make it (I make a lot of charges this tournament, which makes for a VERY happy ork player).  I kill a few tomb blades! YES!  I completely forget to charge the unit of killa kans into the remaining tomb blade unit...but I might have ran them up, which is why I couldn't charge. (having already used my waaagh in turn 3)

The morkanaut dies in combat, but the deff dread (in the six wraith, two canoptek spyder, and I don't know how many bases of scarabs survived.  It goes to show, your best painted model is far more powerful then your least painted models!  He may have lost an arm or two, and is killing absolutely nothing, but he's holding up a ton of models!

The final killa kan dies, freeing the majority of the entire necron flank.
Alas, the mighty deff dread falls in close combat.  The upper necron flank is now free.  But he did his duty and will be remembered for at least a few minutes (orks have short memories).  Wtih both flanks now free, the wraiths and remaining bases kill the deff dread that was going to do something I swear (he was waiting for his moment in the right ruins), and the unit of grots that was sitting on the objective.  This will prevent me from getting any more primary points.  He also charges his catacomb command barge into close combat, throwing some wounds on the biker squad, but the resilience of FNP holds them together.  I kill two units of tomb spyders (just miss killing the barge so don't get my secondary objective).

Turn 5:

The killa kans try to figure out a way to grab an objective for one more point.  They are horribly exposed at this point.  The grotzooka ones fire and manage to kill a tomb blade.  (I'm really thinking I should replace all the killa kan weapons with big shootas, so they can act as objective holders and ranged dakka (with 36 range)).  The warboss kills the catacomb command barge, cleaning the area of necrons.  Because he's behind the hill, he is very proud of himself...as he can't see any more necrons! Job done!
Warner moves his massive army forward (just minus a few units from when he started), and fires a few long range shots.  We roll to see if the game continues, and it ends, with a win for the Necrons!.  The orks got linebreaker, two tertiary points (killing a unit grants you a tertiary point), and four primary points, for a score of 8.  Warner got a high score because he had 9 primary, at least 2 secondary, and definitely max tertiary.  (9+4+4 I think).  So 17 to 8.  Not a complete beat down of the walkers, but still a pretty devastating defeat!

Summary

Warner was a great opponent, and the game was fun, even if pretty brutal.  I'm always amazed by the resiliency of the walkers.  They can really take a beating and keep on ticking.  (especially if you get them into combat).  I didn't have any reservations about being competitive vs the necron list...just look at the point cost of wraiths vs killa kans, and you'll cringe a bit :).  I think had I been a bit more aggressive on the right flank, i could have gotten a few more primary points (and had I been smarter with my selections of secondaries).  But lessons to learn!   Hope you guys enjoyed the first of three bat reps!
Picture
On the hobby front, my Nova cart came in.  Now I'm going to measure for some hardwood, and work on a display board for the orks! (while painting more orks!)

Thanks for stopping by and reading guys!
