Honda's Blog: The Battle of "Four" Armies

12/29/2014

"It was amidst a great conflagration of arms, did the multitudes of the army of men from Esgaroth succumb to the hordes of the Elven host upon the planet Erebor."

- Things Tolkien Never Wrote, Chapter 17, pg 25, Anon

(Special Note: We just redid the site architecture, and we are still figuring things out, so apologies for any oddness -Greg)

Picture
Well, Tolkien fans, we are back.

What does this post have to do with Tolkien? Very little really, but when a writer is looking for a "hook", many times there are few depths he or she is unwilling to succumb to. Perhaps some of you were hoping for an insightful critique of the latest episode of The Hobbit (tm) franchise along with a clever twist of a word or two.

Alas, twas not meant to be...for either of us.

All I have for you is a battle report, featuring four mythical armies and very little in the way of special effects, spiders, or dragons.

Guest Blog: The Short, Unhappy Life of Titus Quinctus

12/22/2014

So...c-cold...

Every minute of his existence was defined by one thing. A deep, unending, bone numbing cold.

Picture
Titus had given up on trying to comprehend what was happening to him a long time ago. In fact, he had stopped trying to remember how long he had been in this situation, as it appeared that time as he understood it, no longer applied to him.

It appeared that he had now come under the effect of something much greater.

Honda's Blog: Of Heroes and Monsters

12/15/2014

Welcome back, ladies and germs!

I am happy to report that I have finished painting Ethanaal/Eldrad so that he will be available for our big game on 1/3/15.

I'm fairly happy with the blend of colors. I wanted him to stand out from the rest of my Eldar, so that meant using rich colors, yet staying within the palette I defined for myself (Sand, Turquoise, Purple). The only "step-out" was the warm yellow band that I used to separate the purple from the turquoise.

That was a bit of a gamble in that, from a color wheel perspective, yellow is a good contrasting color, but I wanted to make sure that it remained a soft contrast and didn't hit the viewer across the eyes. So I started off with a brown base, then mixed in some GW Averland Sunset and Vallejo Pale Sand to lighten, eventually working in some Vallejo Off White to get the paleness I was looking for.

The other thing I was aware of is that there are a lot of different types of white on the figure, e.g. helmet, gloves, rune armor. So I needed something that wasn't white, yet gave me a lighter boundary between the darker fabrics.

It seems to work.

Honda's Blog: Naughty Children Spank Their Nannies

If you came here looking for one of those British tabloid articles, I'm afraid you will be sorely disappointed.

On the other hand, if you wanted to read about the inaugural outing of my Iyanden in their first ever battle report ("WEB EXCLUSIVE" ELEVENTY!!!), then you certainly came to the right place.

Greg couldn't resist putting this image up.
Sooo, one of my long time friends, El Jefe, brought out his Grey Knights to take on my Dead Men Walking Eldar army. Jefe has been playing GKs through thick and thin and remained loyal to them throughout their several incarnations.

How can the observer know that? Quite simply, really. All his Grey Knights are metal. So he's a serious, since 4th edition, GK player. When the codex changes, he makes adjustments, but he remains true to his original army. He is a consummate GK kind of guy, certainly quite canny, very crafty, and amusingly jammy.

Guest Blog #6:  Big Guns Never Tire

They say "Big Guns Never Tire!"

Well, neither do tall ones.

So I finished up some big shooters to bolster my walking dead mini-horde. In looking at other people's armies, I don't see many Wraithlords on the table anymore as it seems they've all been replaced with:

Picture
Now, it's hard to argue with the awesomeness as embodied by the wraith-kerniggit, but it's a shame really because Wraithlords are such cool looking models.

Guest Blog: Iyanden #4 Falcons and Serpents, Oh MY!

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends,
We're so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside.

I try to find fun images for Honda's blog posts. Couldn't resist an old school Eldar vs Orks :).

Let's get dirty now, shall we?

While Greg was out gallivanting around...wherever, "some" of us were staying busy, eagerly awaiting his return. Well, maybe not "eagerly", but you get the idea.

So, as I've been putting things together, I'm sure the understanding between us is that eventually they would start to get some color on them and emerge from the "Legions of Grey".

As I think I stated in one of my earlier posts, I was going to do a variation of Iyanden, substituting the glaring yellow for a more sand color...which was fine, but as I got closer to the task I began that "it's one thing to have an idea" and "it's quite another to translate it into something more tangible" feeling.

Guest Blog #3: Honda Works on Wraith Blades and Bases

Another Wonderful Guest Blogger Post From Honda! Enjoy Guys! -G

The way is shut.
It was made by those who are Dead.
And the Dead keep it.
The way is shut.
Dunharrow... Iyanden...sure that works. I think I'm going to memorize that quote so I can recite it in my games when I bring out the Dead Men Walking.

Besides, if I keep my face slack and let my eyes roll back while I'm quoting this, I might freak someone out.

Advantage: Iyanden

Ok this week's focus is on some Wraithblades. I love how they look as models, and I have to add that the Wraithguard/Wraitblade are amazing models, to the point where they almost have too much detail.

Guest Blog Post: Iyanden #2 Greenstuffing!

10/6/2014

Hey fellas. As before, this is a guest blog post from Honda!  Enjoy!
Welcome back Nerds and Nerdettes!

It's time for another chapter of "Feed Your Iodine", er, Iyanden.

In today's effort I wanted to show some HQ choices I modeled up. As stated last post, I really have no idea what I am doing, but stick me in front of bits and in some cases a little green stuff and odd things begin to happen.

At this point, other than the Wraithseer dude, I'm not really sure what I should be running as far as HQs  go. It seems logical that there are some Spiritseers in there, but for a 2000 point army, what makes the most sense?

<Dune-like "internal" discussion: I know, it depends on what you want to do. So what do you want to do?>

Guest Blog Post From Honda: The Iyanden Army

Hey Guys!  I'm happy to introduce you all to Honda, a guest blogger to FYN.  He will be blogging about his buildup of his Iyanden Eldar Army, a nice counterpoint to all the ramshackle orks you've been reading about!  With that said, here is Honda!

I burn witches.

It's what I do, and I have a lot of fun doing it. I built a rather large Black Templar army that's sole reason for existing is to seek out the vile, the weak, and the unforgiven and eradicate them. Especially if they are witches. The Emperor knows that humanity has a tough enough time as it is, without all those screen doors to the warp running around letting in uninvited guests.

Especially guests that don't clean up after they've made a mess.
